Ernestine & Pearly Mae for me too. Always love Adina Porter in everything; she's a wonderful and one of the MOST underrated actresses working today. Amirah Vann was completely new to me: a true revelation. While I wasn't wow-ed by Vann in the first few episodes, by episode 4, hot damn she was slaying it just as much as Porter.
Those two [Porter and Vann] deserve Emmy nominations. Too bad Sony/WGN put them in the same category (deGouw, as well.) Vann should be in the lead category but obviously they are putting all their eggs in the Jurnee Smollet/lead actress/drama category. Stupid decision.
Jessica DeGouw is a good actress. She wasn't given the same dramatic material as Porter and Vann.
Boo (Darielle Stewart) shouldn't be in the discussion; she's a child and cannot be compared to the others. I can't even believe Boo was included in the thread topic subject line? Perhaps it was a joke. Stewart didn't have much to do. Doesn't mean she won't become a great actress someday. Can't put her into this discussion. It's unfair.
Jurnee Smollet (Rosalee) was the weak link among the female cast. I've never considered Smollet to be anything other than a serviceable actress. Go ahead and *hate post* at me for stating my opinion. Jurnee is a pretty girl and that's about all I can say. She has nowhere near the acting chops, experience, training or gravitas as do Porter and Vann (whose film/TV resume might look slim -- her theater credits are extremely impressive.)
Vann and Porter were the true standouts, especially Vann because she was so very unknown. I expect brilliance from Porter because I've never seen her do anything less than mind blowing acting. (That's a blessing and a curse, I guess.) Vann impressed me the most, as I never heard of her. And I'd also give her the "most improved" award. She got better and stronger with each episode.
Rank em?
1. Stine/Vann
1a. Pearly Mae/Porter
2. Elizabeth/deGouw
3. Boo/Stewart
4. Rosalee/Smollet
Yeah, I did put Boo above Rosalee. That's how lukewarm I am on Jurnee's performance.
