Bad news.

This show is for intelligent, question asking people, that do not eat the populist crap shows that are "hype". Unfortunately, majority of Earth's population is not like that and
it is them, who generate the income for TV companies.

And here is the bad news: majority of people already condemned this show as boring, stupid and slow paced, so it will be most likely cancelled.

This is my opinion and you are entitled to it.

From what I've read, USA wants to renew for a second season. I don't understand why most of the so called critics are panning this show. Most of the user reviews on here are good. I really love it. It's not your typical Hollywood inflated garbage fluff. I really hope that there's a second season.

My primary criticism at this point would be the pacing. I didn't really notice it early on as things were gradually unveiling, but the last couple episodes have gotten really long and slow. There are getting to be too many drawn out scenes, revealing one little tidbit, then 20 seconds of the character looking around, digging, walking, whatever, then another little tidbit, the a 10 second look at the character's reaction... at a point it goes from being suspenseful buildup to tedious filler. A prime example from ep 7 - first Tess goes into the abandoned building and we get 2 minutes of her walking through, finding the shoes, finding the "shrine" (or whatever that was), staring at it, taking pictures, lots of slow panning close-ups... ok, slow, but it was fresh info and was capped with a little surprise action. But then Taka goes there later, and we sit through nearly another whole minute just to get the reveal of his mother's name. It just felt labored by the second time through. At points it almost starts to feel like they're extending scenes to take up time they don't have story to fill.

I'm not saying I don't like it. I'm not bored with the story yet, the interconnections are deep and interesting, the dream sequences are lush and effective. But when things get to slow, those reveals that should be "oh, that's how they're connected!" become "huh... what do they have to do with each other." I hope the directors, writers, show runners, etc. can manage to pick up the pace and fill it out with a little more dialog and action without losing the good aspects of the story. Just my 2 cents. And still, I hope it does get picked up.

I did just look at the rating after reading your comment, and was really surprised by a 6.5. It definitely deserves to be rated higher than that.

I may be weird but I love it, and appreciate the pace. I know a lot of people complain about the pace, but it's not even dull or slow, to me. Just dreamlike.

And it gives you time to think about what is happening rather than just being smacked with it. Much more European in structure that way, which is excruciating in a bad show but wonderful in one like this.

I had been under the impression that this was mini-series for some reason. So that they are even considering bringing it back is welcome news. Although it is rather perfect as is.

"And then when my dad died and I was a dog and everything was hopeless there you are with an army of weirdos saving the day. It was perfect."

I feel like they are just taking too long for anything to happen.

Supposed to be 10 episodes in total, and 7 episodes in they still haven't made any seriously important connections yet, and everybody is just totally splashing up a lot of water but not swimming anywhere.

Not to mention, I just don't care for any of the characters and don't feel empathy towards any of them, except maybe the dude looking for his GF.

I suspect the 'conclusion' will end up leaving fans feeling rather "Lost"... 😉

I've watched all but the final episode. I do find it hard to follow what is happening in some of the dreams. More important I do not find any of the characters very interesting. Falling Water has been compared to Lost due to their reliance on mysteries, but one smart thing Lost did was to give most of its characters backstories that made you emphasize with them. With Falling Water, I don't feel that there has been enough of an effort made to make the audience empathize with any of the characters.

reply

Are the critics EVER right? They represent the populist view, which harbors no patience for either the pace nor the thought requirements a wonderful show such as Falling Water demands. This is the best speculative fiction show in years. I hope USA does continue with a second season, although more carefully handled than that of Mr. Robot, which grew so dark that I presume was the reason it lost its loyal fan base.

Uhm, never mind that the sci-fi aspect is mostly wrong...

TRULY intelligent people can rip its concept to bits in seconds. It's clear the writers did the most cursory of research and built it primarily out of old tropes and cliches from better movies and short stories that, while still wrong, were at least compellingly crafted in a purely fictional direction.

Truly intelligent people would use citation when making such allegations so that they don't appear to be an opinionated blowhard. You seem to be making an accusation ("while still wrong") without actually backing it up. Do you have a hard time saying, "I didn't like it?"

I gave up when the two characters jumped into the refrigerator. That seemed like a real Dr. Who move. I got sick and tired of wondering if they were dreaming or not.

I decided to check this site first before watching the three episodes I have on the VR. Usually, I do not invest further time in a show after I get the news it has been cancelled. My normal source for cancellations doesn't show one for this show but three hours of investment is a long time and sometimes this place knows things. In this case, I'll just watch the episodes anyway since that's all I have left on the VR during the networks' Xmas break.
