I actually liked it

It did lack on solid character development, but it had solid acting, and a good flow. I like that the film was basically two distinct halves. The first half setting up the *beep* and the 2nd half letting it all go. And contrary to popular opinion, I found Kate Mara to be quite a badass.

I feel like this film delivered a twist that was obvious, but never cheated. Rose Leslie and Paul Giamatti were standouts as well.

My biggest gripe was not exploring it's opportunity enough, and lack of character development. It did reminde of introducing characters in the F13 films, only to kill them off.

But the film itself was enjoyable for me, and I found that the films 2nd half was easily it's strongest point.

7.5/10

Nothing groundbreaking, but it had a good foundation to it.

I didn't like the film because I thought it would have gone in a different direction; the ending wasn't particularly unique to me since I read many books with similar ending-types. I will admit, though, that I might have liked the story (and ending) more if the character development was better fleshed out; from my perspective, it was just a bunch of characters running around onscreen doing standard horror/thriller stuff without much reason.

I enjoyed it as well and honestly can't believe how horrible it's doing at the box office. It's a holiday weekend, but I expected it to be maybe #5? I read it came in less than 3 million at #18?!?!? This was NOT horrible enough to deserve such low numbers!

reply

It's a holiday weekend, but it's Labor Day weekend which is traditionally one of the worst performing box office weekends of the year. Of course this still doesn't explain the phenomenally bad opening weekend for Morgan (reportedly the 7th worst opening of any movie released in 2000+ theaters).

The studio was anticipating an $8M opening weekend, which would have put it in the #3 spot for the weekend. I enjoyed the movie, but from what I understand the marketing department tried to sell it as a more straightforward horror movie. I can see why audiences rated it low if they were expecting one thing and got another. Also, I didn't see any ads for it at all - trailers, TV spots, or even internet ads, despite being somebody who watches a good bit of sci-fi and horror.

I really liked it. I suspected the twist early on, and that didn't sour the movie for me. This movie will be appreciated in time.

It had several fight scenes between Kate Mara and Morgan that were very-well choreographed.

reply

That is one of the standout things for me about the movie. The fight scenes, although not incredible or amazing, were very solid.

I agree with you, I enjoyed it, don't understand the hate really

reply

There's not really that much hate. Just consider that when people dislike something they are way more likely to whine like spoiled little kids about it. It still has 5.8/10 for now which is pretty good here on IMDB, I think.

I gave it a 7 as I enjoyed it pretty much too :-)

I came into the movie not even knowing what it was about or watching a trailer for it.

Not bad at all. My biggest gripe was the same as yours. Character development was meh. I also thought there would be a more important relationship between Kathy and Morgan.

I also gave it a 7.5/10. If we were to factor in how good Kate Mara looked in this movie, it would get an 8/10 for sure. lol.
