Gozer is a pussy here

In original:
She is a god (NOT A GHOST)
She CANNOT be defeated physically (you need to destroy her portal)
She can transform into anything she wants
She comes to destroy all life and objects

What the hell is she doing in this kids movie?
What is this housewifely, sitting around bored, ghosttrap trappable, proton pack hittable, untrasforming, Mickey Mouse pg13 version?

Couldn't they come up with something else for fuckin' Oklahoma?

reply

Actually, Gozer is quite a bit MORE powerful in this one. When the GBs try to cross the streams again, she's able to physically rip the streams apart.

And you know that the original "Ghostbusters" was rated PG, right?

Just because the GBs didn't try something in the original movie doesn't mean it's not effective against Gozer.

reply

1 pg in 1984 had a TOTALLY DIFFERENT MEANING. Like, what a big coke was then and now. Clear?

2 in GB they cannot even touch Gozer. They defeat her by shooting the portal, exactly because they could nothing on her, including shooting her with the proton pack.

reply

They roasted Gozer pretty good when she stepped on that church...

The Stay Puft Marshmallow Man IS Gozer. It's not a separate character and they destroyed her when the portal blew up.

And knock off the condescending attitude. You can either enjoy this for what it is or be a bitch and whine about something you can't change. Choose wisely, Ray.

reply

No shit the Marshmallow Man is Gozer.
They did nothing to him. Set him of fire...so what?
He was even more destructive that way. He looked mildly pissed off and was about to kill them and take down the whole building.
He looked worried only when they attacked the portal and send Gozer back.

reply

He doesn’t have the ability not to be condescending. He’s always a dick.

reply

Gozer was defeated EASILY in GB1.

Always was a pussy.

reply

Gozer was never defeated, they just had (luckily) her portal right there so they destroyed that, sending her back to her dimension. But Gozer herself was supposedly invincible, unstoppable, and certainly NOT A GHOST.

reply

I aint afraid of no ghost.

reply

SHE AIN'T NO FREAKIN GHOST

reply

He would be scared shitless of Gozer and Zuul, though.

reply

oh no doubt, I would be too...

reply

The only ghost I would be happy to see is the one that visits Ray while he sleeps...

reply

Within the fantastic/comedic Ghostbusters universe, I could accept a ranch-sized Gozer trap (big enough for a large, moving torb, a giant sloar or a hundred-foot marshmallow man)

Egon had 20 years to come up with a way to trap Gozer.

Even with his genius, the trap only barely worked, and failed outright the first two times they tried to use it

It took four proton streams to hold the gozerian and a fifth to power the capacitors

So, from a dramatic standpoint at the very least, the enormous effort and large scale was enough to justify trapping the previously untrappable Traveler

that's my take, anyways

reply

Well, I see that you put a lot of thought in your great reply.
From a dramatic standpoint at most, the enormous effort and large scale is enough.
But scientifically I don't buy how a ghost trap, designed for ectoplasms, can work on a god or a demon. Even a giant trap should not work. It will not trap a human nor a mouse. I saw Gozer as a physical being from another dimension. So, physical like something that the regular ghost trap won't trap.
Ghosts are described as ethereal beings rom our dimension instead.

I could accept this story had they said that Egon modified that giant trap to capture gods. But we see them using a mere regular trap and injure Gozer. And they use proton packs on her. The science was bs, ignorant of the GB lore, or just bad retcon.

reply

Maybe the traps catch supernatural energy, which would include Gozer and ectoplasm. It never said what the traps were limited too.

reply

Ok but if that is the case, why did they never try them in GB 1 and 2 on anything other than pure ghosts?

reply

Maybe the new traps have been tweaked or modified, or perhaps the old traps did just that, and they didn't know. I'm assuming it was left vague intentionally.

reply

Perhaps Egon built an entirely different sort of trap, a trap designed to capture a demon like Gozer? As ExTechOp said, he spent 20 years in isolation designing something specifically for Gozer. I don't think it's a stretch at all to say that he was able to come up with something that worked.

reply

Yes ok, that would explain it perfectly, but it's never addressed in the movie.
Actually, what is shown is that a REGULAR ghost trap is thrown at Gozer and it wounds her.
Which makes 0 sense.
And the "giant" trap just looks like 20 or so regular trap connected.

reply

Well to be nit-picky about it, they used the trap on Zuul who isn't a ghost but seems to be ectoplasmic -- she travels as a mist and possesses humans without changing their forms (other than their clothing).

Trapping Zuul is what crippled Gozer, and the reason why both Egon and Phoebe were using that trap as bait.

But yeah ... there was nothing special about the farm-wide Gozer-trap other than being made up of hundreds of standard traps buried in the dirt.

HOWEVER

(A) Phoebe and Podcast did give a bit of exposition, stating "this is what he was working on ... to finish what the Ghostbusters started ... to trap Gozer" so we can guess that Egon did SOMETHING to his tech to make it Gozer-compatible and

(B) the traps actually seemed to be sucking in individual ghosts from the swarm above. Gozer started dematerializing as the ghosts were trapped. So same as trapping Zuul wounded Gozer, maybe trapping ALL of Gozer's minions is what traps Gozer itself.

It's tricky, though. I thought the movie was slow-moving enough as it was without bogging itself down with even MORE exposition. I enjoyed it but glad I didn't shell out cash for the theater run.

reply

Allright, it might make sense the way you put it but it sounds a bit like retcon (since when Gozer's power is directly connected to ghosts? He needed Zuul and Vince to open her portal, that's all that was described in GB).
Or I could have used some exposition justifying this retcon.
But agree, it was slow moving enough to not add even more tech bs.

Still, I wish they kept the rules clear for Gozer and respected her original character, or better, invented an alltogether NEW boss

reply

Heisenberg, you come across as EXTREMELY ARROGANT in your self-proclaimed "unassailable" "100%" "correct" "canonical" knowledge of Gozer.

Just accept that you may actually NOT have had the character correct in the first place, eh?

reply

She's a super natural entity, so I'm not following your logic. Hell, you could shoot a living creature and it's going to disintegrate anything it touches.

Neither fight with Gozer is particularly long. Hell, the Vigo fight isn't long either. It's seemingly not a priority of the franchise
to have eborate action sequences.

She's arguably tougher in this one. As someone pointed out, she rips apart the streams.

I don't recall it ever being stated you have to destroy the gate.

"What the hell is she doing in this kids movie?
What is this housewifely, sitting around bored, ghosttrap trappable, proton pack hittable, untrasforming, Mickey Mouse pg13 version?

Couldn't they come up with something else for fuckin' Oklahoma? "

I don't know what any of this is supposed to mean.

reply

1 Nobody asked for a long, epic fight. Just one that makes sense.
2 In GB the streams don't affect her at all.
3 They try everything, the only strategy that works is shoot one giant stream at THE PORTAL. You do the science.
4 It means her presence, in Oklahoma of all places, is forced and not needed.
And she is played out of character from what was established before.

reply

This movie is not cannon. I saw in the original cartoon (which is cannon) that Gozer was reformed, and was let out of the containment unit in order to defeat a giant Mantodea. After Gozer won, it hung out with the kids of NYC, and let them use it's gigantic marshmallow limbs as play slides. This is the original cannon. Not some crap that took place in Oklahoma. Seriously, in the words of a truly enlightened being "Does Oklahoma even exist? Think about it. Have you ever been to Oklahoma? Do you know anyone from Oklahoma? Probably not, and therefore It doesn't exist!"
