Tried giving this an honest chance, but had to give up halfway through the second episode. Couldn't take much more of the lead characters macho tripe. Is this really how some work conditions are in the UK?

He's hard to take. In fact, none of the men here are very likable; can't really root for any of them.
Et quid amabo nisi quod aenigma est...?
I see this as a character study and accept it for that. Solving the crime will come but getting there through the eyes, feelings and memories of the main characters is the journey. I find this to be the case with many British dramas. Much better development of character than in the States.
