girl meets world stans...

take SEVERAL seats!!!

all on instagram people are saying this show copied girl meets world. at first i thought it was some practical joke, but these people were serious. let me tell you something about girl meets world... IT'S BEEN DONE BEFORE.

girl meets world is one of the least original shows on the entire network and here's why. maya is supposed to be the bad girl with the goody two shoes friend *cough* ICARLY, VICTORIOUS *cough* farkle is the goofy male friend *cough* ant farm, austin and ally *cough* and riley... HA riley is a repeat of every young female character to be on kid TV. and aside from the characters let's talk about the fact that a show about everyday life situations has been done before. BMW, SISTER SISTER, BLOSSOM, THE BRADY BUNCH for pete's sake, FULL HOUSE, FAMILY MATTERS, SAVED BY THE BELL, LIZZIE MCGUIRE, the list goes on, I'm sure some people can add more shows to it. girl meets world has been done before. it's just a new show for this generation but trust me I've seen this storyline before. and don't even get me started on the blonde/brunette best friends thing

two girls who have been best friends since childhood, blonde/brunette, bffs, "sisters" all that cliche crap has been done on icarly, shake it up except for the blonde part, BLOSSOM, lizzie mcguire, get the point? girl meets world isn't brand new. it's a repeat of everything done before it, pretty much every show/book/movie is, just look at Divergent and Hunger Games, people compare that to Battle Royale. I've seen none of the listed movies but i can assure you i understand why they're compared. nothing is original anymore, i like to write stories in my spare time and i get a lot of my ideas from my mind and tv. look at the show dog with a blog, it has a talking dog, guess which other show had a talking pet. oh yeah, SABRINA THE TEENAGE FREAKING WITCH!! k.c. undercover has been done, they call that show FAMOUS JETT JACKSON!! good show btw, better than the stuff Disney shoves out today.

i wanted to post this thread because i just know that as this show goes on and gets more and more noticed pathetic GMW STANS are going to come on here and have something to say. if you just oh so love girl meets world and think it's the answer to every tv show ever made then FINE you have that right, but don't go trashing landry bender and the cast for this show. i haven't checked out this show yet, not too interested in it, but i hate seeing stuff like this.

i just knew as soon as girl meets world was made it was going to stir up problems for other kids who want to be on Disney. rowan blanchard and sabrina carpenter are just two out of thousands of young starlets. there are child stars who can out act rowan and sabrina to the point where your jaws will drop , heck there have been stars like that, can you say dakota fanning, abigail breslin, chloe moretz especially has been getting a lot of screen time.

stop basing your love or dislike of a show off of whether it's as good as your precious girl meets world. that's like me saying oh if stan isn't funny like the cat on sabrina the teenage witch then i am SO not watching dog with a blog, like come on these are two different shows here. GMW is not BFW and vice versa.

you know you same people are the ones who were hollering "oh Disney doesn't have any shows about morals and everyday life" okay so Disney introduced GMW to shut you up. now tell me, and don't lie, if Disney was to make ANOTHER show where it talked about life problems would you a. like it and be glad or b. say it was copying girl meets world. majority of you will say A but you'll be meaning to say B, because if this show, that is about time travel mind you, is "copying" GMW then i can only imagine how badly you'll rip into a show that actually does have the same concept as GMW. you know there are kids all over the internet begging stars like rowan and sabrina to help them get on Disney, but i fail to see why they would want to. it brings nothing but negativity. just look at landry bender lol girl's got her own show and can't catch a break because she's a brunette that reminds people of rowan.  i can't with you all...

I agree with most of that. Especially the end. Very well said. Shows will inevitably copy other previous shows, and sometimes current shows. Especially on Disney and Nick.

Most shows are not timeless classics even when they are great. I like how Disney airs old shows but it's not as if they can air those shows all day with nothing current. Even if they use their best shows from the past. Madden 2010 was awesome but EASports is not gonna say, "no more madden games, we can stop making them because we don't wanna keeping copying ourselves. "

Current shows reusing plots, settings and premises is a great way of exposing each new generation to timeless jokes and plots.

I see nothing wrong wrong with that unless it gets shameless. For instance, if they instead of copying iCarly the leads are named Sam Shay and Carly Puckett. That's lame. But most shows run on opposites attracting in a 2-4 person dynamic. So this isn't anything new and it's not gonna stop.

It's a shame, as you said, that many others when berate this show because it seems less than original. Sometimes newer shows are better because they learned from previous shows mistakes(hopefully) and might even have a more tweaked formula.

Also I agree with its not fair about people saying its copying GMW. I don't see it. Gmw is more family oriented. BFW doesn't seem like it's gonna focus parents at all. No Auggie either lol.

In closing, at least the brunette is the lazy one.

You're right, crazyforyou19, there's not a lot of never-did-that-before in sitcom land. Or drama land either. (When I was a teenager secret-agent shows were all the rage because of the successful James Bond movies.) It's the quality of material the creators and writers of a show shape around an existing concept that make it a classic or a dud.

I think you are over-reacting to what these instagrammers are saying about a show that (as I write this) has aired only three episodes. Let "Best Friends Whenever" settle in first (it usually takes the first 10 episodes of a new show) and then see what they say. (Some "Boy Meets World" fans posting on IMDb were ready to bail on "Girl Meets World" after the first episode because it didn't measure up to their nostalgic, rose-colored memories of the original.)

If you start at the beginning of network television, 1947 or so, you might find six general sitcom concepts. (I'm throwing out a number for argument's sake, I don't know how many.) One you mentioned: the goody-goody with the rebel/bad-girl/slacker best friend who somehow balance out each other. Alex (rebel) and Harper (good girl) on "Wizards of Waverly Place" is another Disney Channel example.

Another is the Ralph-and-Ed stereotype from the 1950s classic show "The Honeymooners": Ralph Kramden was an insecure blowhard, a tough-talking know-it-all who was hard-pressed to admit he doesn't know that much and is a softie at heart; his best buddy was Ed Norton, a happy-go-lucky, dim bulb with a heart of gold who has nary a bad word for anybody. They've been recycled as Fred (Ralph) and Barney (Ed) on "The Flintstones", as Cousin Larry (Ralph) and Balki (Ed) on "Perfect Strangers" and a few other shows I'm not aware of or have forgotten. Ralph and Ed are recyclings of the "Laurel and Hardy" movies of the 1920s and 1930s. Stan Laurel was the simpleton with the heart of gold and Oliver Hardy was the know-it-all blowhard.

Heck, on Disney Channel Zack and Cody recycled "The Odd Couple" (which was a huge-hit Broadway play before it became a hit television series in the 1970s and again last year). Zack is sloppy, freewheeling Oscar Madison and Cody is prissy, germ-o-phobic, cultural snob Felix Unger.

Right now "Girl Meets World", the spinoff of "Boy Meets World", is the strongest Disney Channel show, I believe, of those that have aired at least half a season. Its stories dig a little deeper emotionally and have a little more drama despite the surface appearance of clichéd sitcom sameness. But that's an example of using material well. "Liv and Maddie" has moved in that direction with a couple of episodes this season, and it is strong enough written and acted to do more. The creators of "Girl Meets World" have a strong track record; they broke new ground with "Boy Meets World" in the 1990s, a goofy sitcom at heart that wasn't afraid to tackle tough issues and dark themes (like one character being abandoned by his parents and then his father dying of a heart attack). I hope "Girl Meets World" signals to the Disney suits that Disney Channel can air hit, G-rated, "dramedy" shows and even an outright drama series (something other than limited-run vampire or werewolf shows in Halloween season). Also that Disney Channel can run hit shows deliberately aimed at the entire family, not just the 7-12 tween demographic. I first watched Disney Channel in 1987, when it was more like PBS with a mouse ears I.D. logo (and no annoying pledge drives). I don't want it to return to that era, but it can expand its programming to attract a much wider age range.

Having said that, I enjoy the outright silly, goofy shows such as "Dog With A Blog" (Karl Fink is a hoot). I don't want those kinds of shows to all go away. Disney Channel is my go-to channel when I need an escape from the stresses of the day. I'd like "Austin & Ally" more if Dez were toned down, a lot. (Does he even have an off switch?) "Jessie" was really good through the first 2½ seasons, but the writing has slipped much since then. I haven't seen a full episode of "Best Friends Whenever" because the time-travel theme didn't appeal to me (but then the talking-dog show is one of my top 4 faves, go figure). But if I give "Best Friends Whenever" a chance I probably will like it. From the previews so far it looks like they have a lot of trouble controlling how and when they time travel; I hope the girls work that out soon.

Yeah, I know filankey is not a word, but it's gonna catch on.

While I don't disagree, I do have to say that before ANY of those shows, there was Boy Meets World. Which is what Girl Meets World is based on. The basic setup of GMW is almost identical to BMW, right down to the two friends since they were kids, the love interest and the nerdy friend. Though the nerdy friend only lasted like one season in BMW.
