Steve? What happened to Reggie?

I understand Joe the Dog passed away. He had played Reggie since 2005.

But since Jesse took the death of his former dog so badly, why couldn't they just have Ned the Dog play Reggie instead of introducing a new dog that looks exactly like Reggie.

Steve.

I haven't seen this yet (and don't care if I'm spoiled or not) but I'd like to know why they just didn't have Ned play Reggie. It makes little sense that Jesse would get another dog that looks just like Reggie because he never chose Reggie to begin with. His former dog was, I think, a bloodhound. You'd think if Reggie died and Jesse had a chose of breeds he'd go with a bloodhound rather than the golden.

Jesse and Reggie were just warming up to each other in the last film. I was hoping to see them much closer this time around.

RIP Joe. You were a great dog actor and did a fabulous job as Reggie.

Ned has very large pawprints to fill.

Getting a new dog is part of the plot and the theme of the show. Jesse is lost, on the brink, and Steve the dog is about to be put down by a shelter after losing his former owner, a murder victim. Steve won’t eat. So Jesse and Steve the dog sort of find salvation together as the story goes.

Jesse is such a quiet, internal character that I think they needed the dog to help show Jesse’s progress. It’s not subtle. Like Jesse is about the be put down, like Steve, until they help each other sort of thing.

I agree with you though. I liked the movie, but I sorta wish it carried more momentum from the last ones.

Isn't that pretty much the exact same story line that brought Reggie to Jesse? Reggie witnessed his owner's murder and there was no place else for him to go except a shelter to be put down or to Jesse's house?

Reggie also was aloof and wouldn't eat or connect with Jesse. Wouldn't even fetch sticks like he did with his old owner. The last movie was so touching when Reggie brought Jesse a stick. He had finally put his past behind and accepted Jesse. I thought that was the beginning of their relationship, not the last thing we'd ever see.

I can't help but think they could have kept Reggie and developed a different plot point.

I guess I'll know better when I see it.

I just burst into tears when I saw Reggie's grave.

Quite unexpected.

I choked up when I saw his grave..."Reggie, My Conscience."

That sure got me! :(

I wondered if they wanted to acknowledge the death of the original dog-actor and show a little respect rather than just recast Reggie. If so I approve of the sentiment.

reply

I think that's exactly what they did.
