My Favorite Character in the Jesse Stone Movies

Reggie!

Seriously, how many, um, actors, can be so expressive without saying a word? He keeps Jesse grounded, too.

Unfortunately, the, um, actor, playing "Reggie" died. I see they credit a new, um, actor, in this new film, giving him a different name, too. I hope "Reggie" gets mentioned, and honored, in the new film. It won't be the same without him. Unless Ned, in the role of "Steve", is just as good...

I agree with you. Hopefully they will make a nice explained transition like they did from Boomer. But the pics of the new dog look a lot like Reggie so maybe they will just keep him playing the same dog character.

reply

Well, the credits here say the new character is named "Steve", not "Reggie", so I assume it won't be the same character. Hopefully there will be some mention made of the transition.

"What are you lookin' at?"

LOL

When I tuned in just now on Hallmark for Lost in Paradise and found that Reggie was gone, I about cried. Definitely my favorite character, and so important to Jesse. So glad to hear from you guys that there will be another Golden Retriever to carry on.

My favorite too. Very under rated dog actor. Not all dogs are photogenic nor can portray emotions with facial expressions. Joe was a great Reggie.

And I see he is replaced with Steve. Ned has several credits and I'm sure will do a credible job.

But Jesse took the passing of Boomer very hard. Even though Reggie was thrust upon him rather than his choice, they grew quite close near the end. I was hoping to see that relationship grow closer in this movie. Reggie finally opened up and made a choice to be with Jesse, rather than just living with him.

And then....nothing? Gone?

If there is no mention whatsoever of the transition to the new dog that is a HUGE faux "paw". And very, VERY poor writing.

Quite frankly, I tuned in for Reggie as much as for the story. I loved the exchanges between Reggie and Jesse. I know W.C. Fields said never to play opposite a dog (or children) but Reggie was the best.

The character should have lived on even if the actor passed away.

If they could have two Darrens on Bewitched, why not two Reggies on Jesse Stone?

reply

I agree about the faux "paw", and I, too, was hoping the relationship would grow closer. Reggie and Jesse had finally made a breakthrough (dog sleeping on his bed, even though Jesse didn't know). But I'm just glad there is another dog.

Listen, I love dogs and missed Reggie too. Love the fact that Steve come into play.

But there are so many darn great characters in these films no way he makes my top 5.

Anyone else really like Gloria Rueben and disappointed she had such a small role in this movie?

I miss Saul Rubinek too, he's great.

Joe the Dog was one of the regulars.

Check out the credits and Reggie was right up there with Suitcase and Rose.

His character had an impact on Jessie as much as the humans did.

Sorry, he still makes my top five. In fact, he's #1 since he has so little to work with to build a character, having no lines and all.

The tribute to Reggie centered the movie. Profoundly moving to anyone who has ever loved a dog.

Just finished watching and Steve is a wonderful "actor" as well. That face and those eyes could turn me into a puddle. Yes Reggie will be greatly missed but I do think Steve will definitely benefit from his training of Jesse. Although the only thing that bothered me was Steve's age. Steve seemed like an old soul dog and the movie states that he was given as a puppy. So that part didn't line up for me. I do hope they continue to make more Jesse Stone movies with Steve.

The dog was always my favorite character in these movies too! The camera work between the dog and Tom Selleck with no dialog from Jesse is so expert! Anyone who owns a dog with those eyes/face knows how expressive they can be. It was just priceless when he finally ate the spaghetti, not the steak, the spaghetti!

I love the way they paid tribute to Reggie at the beginning of this movie. I read an article about the passing of "Reggie." They said that the original dog was just a family pet when he first auditioned for these movies and then they just kept making them. Same handler/owner for this dog "Steve" and when this was filmed he was only 14 months old....so the puppy story-line would fit. But, also they said this dog was very timid at first and that came across with the old soul type dog we saw in this film. Maybe in a future installment the dog will be more active or puppyish!

He is a Irish Setter/Golden Retriever mix....they are high-energy dogs, and Jesse is not! I never knew how that Golden Retriever would just sit around all the time while Jesse drank...but I guess that dog was much older. Looking forward to the next movie and more with Steve.

I thought Steve did a great job! Very expressive eyes and face.

And when he heard and saw his deceased owner on that DVD, that was so well done.
