Put in an institution or death?

Misty can't be any older than her mid-thirties (at the most), so it seemed strange to me when her mother was talking about her birth and the options given by the doctors were to put her an institution or take her life. By that time I believe that little people were more common or at least not an absolute freak of nature that couldn't be part of society.

Also on that same episode, if Jordanna had a company that supports opportunities for little people...I got the impression they really do great things, why did she have to rely on her friends to dance? I found it humorous how they were all thrilled for Jazmin to perform on Broadway, like it was a big boost to her career, while like Dawn said, 'There's nobody here.' Dawn's method may be wrong, but she says a lot of truth.

I thought the same thing! I actually think Misty is in her 20's. I can't imagine any doctor saying those things 20-30 years ago. What kind of backwoods hospital did she go to?

reply

She's 22 I believe.

reply

No way!? What doctor did her mother see just two decades ago that still gave that answer? A witch doctor in a third world country?

reply

Not to say all doctors in the South are quacks because that's obviously not true. I live in Mississippi and even now people say that when you get her you should turn your clock back at least 100 years. Louisiana is maybe slightly better but not by much.

I feel it's very possible that in the South, the people were still very much uneducated about little people and their capabilities even just 20 years ago. I don't think it's really all that far out, especially if she grew up in a more rural area.

I've lived all over the "South" and I've encountered nothing but doctors with real medical degrees from real universities with real medical schools. I get a kick out of the people who still act like we ride horses to school in Texas and have yet to see the modern world.

Maybe you hang out in possum piss towns that do not have high turnover with population and industry expansion? Which exist in the "North" as well.

reply

Someone hit a nerve lol. You know there are real doctors with real degrees who are complete quacks right? Not to mention you go to ten doctors you'll get more than one differing opinion. maybe Misty is from a really backwards area, which just so happens to be in the south.

reply

Do you know how ridiculous you sound?

reply

Nope, just pointing out how stupid someone sounds in 2015 to act like the "south" is still this isolated microcosm of inbreeding, backwards people who lack education and exposure.

reply

I'm sure the doctors you may be talking about are the "younger" ones. Misty's parents look older. Mom probably has had the same GYN since her puberty days! Lol. These older doctors are very old school. Idk what it's like in the south so I'm just guessing that may be the reason she got those options only 22yrs ago.

reply

Bottom line is her front teeth are yellow, She's been going @ it
pretty hard. Tobacco is no joke & yes it's her choice however with
all the exposure and in your face hardcore reality PSA's and full
adverts re the risks, does she and pea-brain really need ANYONE
to tell them the dangers. I would think the surgeon general trumps em all!

I was born in Mississippi in 1977, and six months later, after it was discovered that I had a neurological disability, my mother was highly encouraged by the doctors to institutionalize me and walk away. Though we moved away from Mississippi shortly thereafter, I can tell you that it is very much the same. It would not shock me if very rural parts of the south still do this.

reply

Wow, sorry to hear that, but thank you for sharing. Glad your parents made the right choice. Sad to hear things like that still happen in modern society.

Even up north a lot of the really bad institutions didn't close until the 80's. Maybe other parts of the country were after that. To institutionalize someone who is completely normal except smaller and may need some surgeries is horrible. Back in the early 1900's they used to put people with epilepsy in institutions, who were of normal intelligence, but after a some years they would go downhill.
