Most disturbing scene

the hamster scene.....poor little girl. I had a hamster as a kid...That was so cruel!

reply

Agreed :(

reply

Agreed x 2. I closed my eyes for that scene, and I NEVER close my eyes at movies!

although I was also disturbed at the firecracker scene, but for the wrong reason. How did the kids plan it so the fireworks were timed to go off as soon as she opened the lid?

reply

I couldn't watch that, I don't mind people dying in films but hate animal deaths, that was a horrible scene that wasn't needed, it'd been better if Emilie just teased Sally then pulled the hamster out as Sally sobbed then called her a "crybaby" or some other mean name, that's crueler, animal deaths put me off films

That's really...wow. The only scene that I found hard was the baby suffocating. But if the hamster made you more sad than a baby, I honestly don't even know what to say to that.

reply

Totally agree. I ALWAYS stop watching a film when something like that happening (even if its fake f.e. dog scene in Babadook film). And at once I get out of the cinema or erase the file in my computer, just like that. I just say NO to that kind of "entertainment" and NO to whoever had to do with that, director/actor etc. In my opinion, it must be stopped the fake/or not torturing of animals in films NOW.

reply

Oh no, how bad is the dog scene in Babadook? I've been wanting to watch that, but not if there's a dog murder :(

reply

Totally agree with you. That scene was horrid, with the poor girl sobbing for her hamster. I lost interest after that and decided to look on the boards here to make sure it didn't get much worse. I'm a big fan of horror, shocking horror even. But a whole movie of tormenting children and making them watch a video like she did disgusts me

reply

It was scratching it's little paws on the glass to get out!!! Hardest scene to watch by far. I've had many hamsters in my life.

reply

Yeah, I know it's only a film and obviously make-believe, but god I hate seeing animals suffer. This was horrible to watch. :-(

I'm going to cuddle my cat now, that's what I do after seeing things about animals. At least I know she's safe and happy. :-)

The tampon scene made me hate that chick and then when the hamster came out I had enough.

Those who don't believe in magic will never find it -RD

This movie had the potential to be really good but several things just killed it. First of all, the writer/director could get across the fact that the girl was a sick b___ without having the kids watch that much sex on tv, they could get across the graphic nature of this movie without showing so much graphic material and explain some of the scenes without leaving us hanging or using our imagination to figure out what happened (i.e. was it her that was kidnapped in the beginning?, who did it and why? and why did she pick the little boy to be her cubby? and who was the baby in the dream and was it being suffocated?) I actually considered turning the movie off, if not for my husband it would have been. Very disgusting movie.

Last thought, I am almost 50 and feel I am pretty knowledgeable, but what in the world did the boy mean when he told his friend, "I think I just saw my first china hole" (talking about the tampon scene)? I feel silly asking but never heard of it and tried to look it up and could not find it either.

reply

"'gina hole," maybe?

reply

Quick answers (gobs and gobs of spoilers)...
- The kidnapped girl was Anna. She was supposed to sub babysit for Maggie but they killed her, put her in the trunk of their car, and called in sick on her behalf so Emelie could take her place.
- there was no one official reason Emelie targeted their kid to be cubby. They just fled their previous community/lives, landed in a new town, and went "hunting" to find an opportune situation and family.
- the baby in the bedtime story was a flashback to Emelie's past where she fell asleep, rolled over and accidentally suffocated her son.
- China hole was another way of saying vagina.

No. Emelie introduced herself to everyone as Anna, so there was no need to pretend the real Anna was sick.

This thread is ridiculous. Animals eat other animals.. It's not some evil act for a snake to eat a live rodent. Good grief.

From the little girl's perspective in the movie, it was cruel. But the hamster being eaten by a predator, who cares? Circle of life and stuff.

reply

By that logic, you shouldn't make a big deal about it if your parents die because, hey, people die. So who cares?

It was an evil thing for a HUMAN to do to another HUMAN, especially the way she involves the brothers in it. It's not about the snake and the hamster.

reply

A human dying is not the same as a hamster dying to feed a snake, lol. Have you ever had a pet reptile? They have to eat, too. Of course, you seem to think that snakes don't deserve to eat or that it's different if they eat a dead rat instead of a live one. Do you not think it's cruel for a pet snake to only eat dead things? That's not natural or satisfying for the snake.

As for your second point, I obviously understand the scene was meant to be psychological torture, as I already mentioned in my previous post. If you read the entire thread you will see most posters are complaining about the poor hamster dying and not about how it made the little girl feel. I am only pointing out how ridiculous it is to cry over a snake getting a routine feeding like it's the worst thing in the world.. and I certainly disagree about it being the most disturbing scene. I'd say the tampon scene was more disturbing because it bordered on pedophilia.

reply

It was HER pet, she had an emotional attachment to it.

And yes, POOR Hamster, that's not a nice way to go.

You need to get over the fact that some people are animal lovers.

reply

Obviously you've never had a pet snake or you wouldn't be boohooing over a snake feeding on a rodent. Too gross for you? Hypocrite much? Pet snakes eat live mice. I guess you only care about some animals but not the scaly kind. You also seem to think the life of a hamster is more important than the life of a feeder mouse. Or perhaps you think snakes shouldn't eat at all and just die? You don't sound like much of an animal lover to me.

FYI if you feed your non-herbivore pet store bought pet food, they are eating other animals. I guess that means people with dogs and cats aren't animal lovers because they feed their pets meat.

As far as the movie goes, they said they only feed the snake dead mice. That is cruel to the snake. Eating the live hamster was probably the best moment of it's captive life. But I guess you don't care about the snake's welfare because it's not cute and cuddly. Hypocrite.

Also, is your reading comprehension that poor? I AGREED that it was cruel to the little girl. Dumb twat.

reply

Hey troll, I never said I didn't care about snakes. nice strawman argument there. And since when has it been cruel to give snakes dead mice? If that were true you wouldn't be able to buy them frozen from pet stores.

I own a *beep* snake "dumb twat" there's also a risk of said snake being injured itself by live prey.

In the wild is totally *beep* different, the point I was making was that IT WAS A PET AND IT DIDN'T NEED TO *beep* DIE.

Would you find it acceptable to let your friend's dog die if it came across a huge snake constricting it to death? I'm sure they'd appreciate you shrugging your shoulders and walking off.

Stop being an arrogant douche and accept the fact that some people found that scene hard to watch.

reply

If you only feed your pet snake frozen mice you are depriving it from using it's instinct to hunt. To some animal lovers it is considered a form of cruelty, much like keeping a wild animal in a zoo is seen as cruel. From my perspective, you are mistreating your snake.

I'm curious to know why you don't cry when you feed your snake frozen feeder mice but a hamster is crossing the line? Is it because you don't see the feeders die? What's the difference? Finally, a pet hamster is not equivalent to an intelligent dog; get real. You sound as ridiculous as the person earlier in the thread who said a hamster dying is just as bad as a parent dying. WTF is wrong with you people?

If you had read my previous posts you would see that I agree it was *beep* to kill the girl's pet; my gripe is with people crying solely over a hamster dying in a movie. They made no mention of the character's feelings and made it clear they were upset because a cute hamster was killed. I think that's hypocritical since the snake has to eat something either way. So for the millionth time, I am AGREEING about the pet part being horrible.

reply

your snake is captive and you think only feeding it dead frozen mice is cruel? By that logic we can't keep any pets.

"a pet hamster is not equivalent to an intelligent dog; get real"

I see who I'm arguing with here, and after seeing that quote, it's utterly pointless.

I'll just end this by saying that some people prefer animals over humans, that's why they hate animal deaths in general and in movies, and I can honestly understand that. As a lot of humans are disgusting hateful douche bags.

reply

So because I understand the difference between a human and a pet, and a dog and a hamster; I must hate animals? Your ignorance is astounding. You are the queen hypocrite who thinks mice are more worthless than hamsters, but when I point out a dog is more intelligent than a hamster I'm an animal hater... Great logic there.

reply

You know when someone is losing an argument when they keep making strawman fallacies...

reply

As far as the movie goes, they said they only feed the snake dead mice. That is cruel to the snake.

According to the subtitle file:

00:32:16,066 --> 00:32:20,931
Anna: "In the wild, these animals are hunters. They always devour their prey alive."

00:32:21,031 --> 00:32:22,807
Jake: "Warm."

So Jake corrected the common myth of snakes having to eat live prey. That's why he was shown removing it from the microwave for feeding.
