Emma's decision (Spoilers)

Why would Emma choose Abby? There was absolutely no reason for this whatsoever other than to serve as a contrivance for the usual all-female survivors. Awful stuff.

Decent film overall though.

Emma promised early on to protect Abby, didn't she? And she held up her promise, unknowing what fate it had in store for her. And if she had taken her boyfriend, everyone would've called her cruel or selfish - so she can't win. Plus the ending wouldn't have had no twist if she and her beau had just been like, "Bye all, keep this girl we barely know." And then the killers would say, "Uh... what do we do now? That kind of ruins our plan..." And I bet if she had spared the guy, the killers would've killed them both before they left.

And no, in many horror movies, it is more common for the final girl to survive with a guy (especially a love interest). I hardly see is it two girls that survive together. Even the movie The Final Girls made note of this.

Evening Mahou, completely disagree with both of your comments.

Why would she care about being called cruel or selfish when her boyfriend's life was at stake? Promise or no promise, there is just no way someone would choose a near total stranger to live over their partner, it was totally illogical and ridiculous.

And no, in many horror movies, the final girl's surviving partner is usually a guy (especially a love interest). Rarely is it two girls that survive together.

You're assuming the girl survives by default which is part of the problem. Men in horror/survival films these days are usually utterly useless and go out with a whimper. It's all part of the male emasculation/ female empowerment theme and it's become boring, stale and predictable.

Although I do agree with you that the final girl thing is getting a bit stale (although in this case it seems there will be no-one left), her saving Abby over her boyfriend does make sense. It's most people's instinct to protect young girls which is probably why the group chose Abby to be their inside person. If my other half was telling me to save his life over a young girl who, as far as I was concerned, we had put in the position she was in to start with then I would really question if he was the man I thought he was.

Evening sforrester-3. He'd probably question if you were the woman he thought you were if you chose a stranger to live at his expense!

I don't know about that all-women survivors thing, but as I watched, I was saying, "She'd better not choose that girl over her boyfriend." True, she and her boyfriend were kind of having a falling out, but there's no way in hell I'd choose someone that I barely know over my loved one. F that. I was thinking before the end that Abby wasn't who she presented herself to be.

"An old man dies. A young woman lives. A fair trade."

Maybe she was thinking something like that...

Because Marcus is an arrogant, egomaniac, selfish and a liar *beep* maybe?

Hell if I know why she made the choice she did. I'd pick the cute boyfriend, but then I'm shallow that way.

However, besides that, there was another factor. It was obviously an inside job. Marcus said as much earlier in the film. Everyone else was dead. Emma knew she wasn't the mole herself, so it was either Marcus or Abby. Who was the more likely mole? Your boyfriend, who's a bit of a d-bag, yes, but does not seem at all the type to be involved with the Freaks, or this girl you hardly know who has a very creepy way about her, is completely entranced by horror and whom the Freaks uncharacteristically allowed you to save? It was not only a disloyal choice but a dumb one.

Also, why were the Freaks so sure she'd choose Abby? What was their contingency plan if Emma had chosen Marcus? "Wrong choice" ... and killed them both then and there?

Scare Campaign was pretty entertaining. It was fast-paced, the acting was good, and there were funny moments without destroying the atmosphere, as so many horror films do when they try to inject humor. Oh, and did I mention that Ian Meadows is really quite easy on the eyes? Unfortunately, the "twist" of the Freaks' arrival was completely predictable, and the ending was both flawed and, as others in the thread have pointed out, also predictable.

So, overall, I'd say it's worth watching but not a classic. I gave it a 6.

He told her to pick Abby.

reply

You would do that? If your partner tells you to pick a stranger over his/her life... Ofcorse not, that's the problem with this movie.

reply

Probably she really did not like him if she chose a stranger over him. And if she loved him and still chose a stranger, than what the hell is love ?
