Is there anyone who is going to stop using IMDB after the 20th???

I haven't made my mind up yet, but to be honest of all the message boards is the main reason I come on here.

I've always been interested in film so yes, i would be watching a film and see someone and go "i've seen that face before" and find out who they are, this site is great for that!

reply

you could really just google thier name for that.

You don't know their name, just the face, so i would go the movie page and look at the cast list and the name of the character he plays and BINGO!

reply

you could google (lets just say for example La La Land cast) and the cast will come up at the top then you just click on there names magic

I want a list of ALL the cast! For example La La Land on Google does not list J.K. Simmons

Googling La La Land takes you to the IMDb page of La La Land. And if you just look at the faces at the top, clicking on them also brings you to IMDb pages. Googling alone will give you some information, but generally when you're looking for something with Google, you'll actually click on one of the links it gives you to get that info.

That's not entirely true. I did a Google search for "La La Land Cast" and large headshots appeared across the top for every one of the credited cast members. Clicking on a headshot opened a small Wikipedia box and, of course, search results related to the cast member's name. The leading link, as you'd suspect, is the IMDB but right after that is the Wikipedia page with as much information as the IMDB profile.

What's nice about the Google search, though, is the size of the head shots. On the IMDB pages, they are extremely small (like 10x10) and difficult to see unless you're very familiar with the actor's face. And since the head-shot that IMDB features is their PR shot, it can be difficult to be sure whether or not the actor is who you think they are. (Hair color changes, age when their main head shot was taken, etc.) On Google, though, the head shots are very large (200+ pixels, square) after selecting an actor you can click on the images tab to view a very broad series of images that makes identification much easier.

For myself, the message boards are a major reason I use the IMDB. As a message to Col and his staff, I plan to avoid the IMDB, including removing their app from my devies, as much as possible once the change is made. I'm just one little guy in a sea of people that are used to using the IMDB, so I'm not fooling myself that my "protest" will have little impact, but when they remove an item I value more than almost any other aspect of their site--other than convenience--I'd hate to reward them by giving them the page views they use to justify their advertising rates to marketers.

P.S. I feel weird being in the "Fifty Shades" thread, so I feel a weird need to explain my presence when I'm 99% about Sci-Fi. I came to this board because I wanted to see if the IMDB claim of "toxic community" held sway and I couldn't think of a recent movie that might have more toxic comments than this one. It's not as bad as Col Needham seems to think.

In space, no one can hear you scream. On IMDB, we can hear you but we just don't give a crap.

I felt that way initially too. Then I gave into the darkness.

The worst offenders are found on the Game of Thrones board, with Walking Dead's with a close second. I don't know why they're shutting the boards down. You'd think those two boards alone is doing the FBI a service. Where else are you going to find a group of this quantity, who are mentally unstable and psychopathic in nature on the internet?

I'll be using it, horneyheather. I have an interest in film and get more information from the IMDB than any other site. As far as the boards, I'll miss them but there are other reasons to use the IMDB.

reply

I'm definitely not gonna stop using IMDb completely. There are other things I use it for, mainly to read movies/TV news.
That being said, I am gonna miss the message boards. I wish I knew of another movie website with message boards. Anyone know any good ones?

I'll miss it too. IMDB just shot themselves in the foot and created a huge opening for other services. I'll be looking for an alternative too.

Trying to compare the forums to social media for IMDB is comparing apples to condensers. You can't get a good dialogue going on Twitter, and the specific forums for movies and actors can be a great source of information.

reply

the only other reason I use it to check out an actor or director's filmography, I'll still use it for that but it will be significantly less often than i do now

It's been nice knowing all of you. Remember to always add me on snapchat or facebook :)

I can't think of a legitimate reason to keep using IMDB after the 20th. Wikipedia is more informative on films than IMDB is.

I thought I could paint it red, but I couldn't find enough goats.

Where else will I be told what an idiot I am for liking a film?

then the devil is 6
if the devil is 6
then God is 7
and if God is 7...

I guess your monkey has gone to heaven. ;-)

Any idea if they will be locked and kept up, or removed entirely?

I think it's terrible that these message boards will be gone soon. This is a great way to communicate with other movie fans and talk about film trivia. Sadly it has turned into a place where people come to insult each other as well, but that doesn't mean they need to cancel the feature. It's especially great for when I have a question about some rare movie from 30 years ago, and someone out there knows the answer and responds. I will be sad to see it go, and I won't be here nearly as much, but i will still use the site to look up movie trivia, and to read reviews. We still have the option of writing those. I'm not sure if this will go over well; this could be the beginning of the end for a great site, because people will start looking elsewhere for this kind of thing..
