I just don't understand...

Why parents are letting their children talk baby talk these days! Our kids were spoken to the same way we spoke to our teens or peers. For that matter even the kids we watched after school were treated the same way.
The oldest child, Jack, is 6 years old. I didn't see the mom talking baby talk to him, yet he definitely talks "baby talk".
Could someone tell me please, is this a side affect of the acondroplasia dwarfism? I was only asking because the kids that play with my nephews are 6 and 7 years old and they also talk "baby talk". Oh, and they arent missing teeth either. So I don't know if that's what causes it.

You would never guess Jack was 6 years old and not just because he's a little person. He talks and acts like a 3 year old, not to mention he is crying running to his mom all the time.

reply

Yeah... I noticed that as well. I just figured that came from his mom being so over protective!

She is also a total hypocrite. I lost count of how many times she said "I don't want my children being singled out as being different" then she'd insist they need special accommodations.

As opposed to being hypocritical, I think (like most parents) she's trying to find a balance between protecting & overprotecting her children. Most of the little people featured in reality-tv & documentaries stay positive, focusing on what they CAN do; but there are things a little person just can't do without assistance (reaching top shelves, standard foot pedals in cars, counter heights, etc). If accommodations (step stools, etc) are put in place before they're needed (step stool in bathroom at school) prevents it from becoming a big deal amongst Jack and the other kids at school. Excusing Jack from p. e., for example, because some things may be difficult, could be considered overprotective. While some activities will put a spotlight on what Jake can't do, he'll also get to see what he can do.

Maybe I haven't seen enough of this show, but the six-year-old sounds three, and the three-year-olds sound 1 and a half. Only occasionally do the children get closer to sounding more age appropriate. At first I was going to ask if the six-year-old had issues associated with achondroplasia, such as difficulty hearing and structural issues with his mouth, but now I'm suspicious by the twins seeming "younger" too.

If we all keep saying he sounds like a three-year-old, what does that make his three-year-old sisters who, from what I can tell, are far behind him? Yes, they all have achondroplasia, but now all this baby-talk is making me think it's not some hearing problem for 100% of them. Even if it was, how is that not being dealt with?

reply

Some kids don't speak clearly until they are much older. It may or may not have anything to do with his dwarfism. He might also be getting speech therapy at school and it just hasn't been mentioned.

I don't personally have any trouble understanding him and whatever speech difficulties he may have are definitely age appropriate.

I disagree. Nothing is "age appropriate" with how muddled his speech is. If it were age appropriate, why would he need speech therapy that you acknowledged he may be getting?!

Hopefully he is getting it. I have a feeling the mother does nothing to encourage her children speak properly.

It's never been mentioned on the show but I get the feeling a lot of Jacks speech problems come from his Dental issues.
I suspect Jack will be a candidate for orthodonture much like Zach Roloff was.

reply

It's most likely the reason Jack speaks the way he does is because he has no front teeth!

Leave the kid alone! He's adorable!

That same thought was going through my mind when I heard him speak on last night's episode. No wonder it's subtitled...
