General Jackson spoke fluent German

I just started watching. Finished episode 1.

General Jackson spoke in German. How unusual was this at the time for a 4 star American general to use only German in dialogue with his West German counterparts. I'd have figured the scene would be in English. Quite refreshing though. I did read the actor is fluent in Germany but still i guess i'd imagine it rare for a German general to speak in his native tongue with a highly ranked US general

He was stationed in Germany after all. He'd speak German at least out of common courtesy for his colleagues and hosts. Diplomats also make an effort to learn the language of the country they're sent to. It's only polite to do so.
