Misunderstood Film

I think people tend to forget Robert Duvall is a very old man now, so this film may not fit well with more modern takes on the southern western drama, even though it is itself a recent production. This film felt to me like a retro approximate 50s character study western with some slight homage to the Australian westerns of back in the day. This was a common structure with no clear ending and somewhat choppy feel due to low budgets and amateur editing. It was part of what made them so endearing but now people want clear concise plot and a firmly stated ending. I think this film was fairly well done all things considered, and I feel bad in a way for Duvall that it has been so negatively viewed in what is my opinion to be due to a misunderstanding of his intentions and a general lack of knowledge of the genre by so many viewers. I have seen about every western and southern crime genre film out there and have seen many that were much lesser films yet rated higher than this so it is a bit frustrating, and I am sure it is for him as well since he is no spring chicken and will likely not put out but *maybe* one or two other directorial seat entry before he retires or passes away. Being a long time fan I guess I just wish he could have had a much better result of this film's release.
