Yet another vanity piece

Like Homesman, Tommy Lee Jones' vanity piece, this was a personal project for Robert Duvall. Not sure why all the pet projects tend to be so meandering... I think they confuse "pointless" with "artistic." I'm actually a big fan of art films, but this really wasn't one of them.

Movies are IQ tests. The IMDB boards are each person's opportunity to broadcast their score.

I agree that it reeks of a vanity piece.

There's lazy directing, amateur acting, amateur dialogue/script, poor editing choices. How can this be, you ask?

Director: Robert Duvall, Writers: Robert Duvall, Lead actress: Luciana Duvall

Well, therein lies the problem.

Don't bother with it.

My principle question is: Has anybody ever seen a good movie that had the same writer or director and main actor? I've seen at least ten of them but couldn't tell that any of them was good.

Now I ask myself what's the problem: Directing and acting in the same movie blurs your mind even if you're a great renowned actor, is it too much stress doing two things at once or what?

I'm warned now and never am gonna watch a movie again if it has this constellation. Too often I've been deceived still always tried again.

It's like in other jobs: stick to what you're good at and leave the rest to people that are good in their business, period.

Dances with Wolves and Braveheart come to mind as good movies where the director was the main actor but I do agree that generally they tend not to end up being successful.

"One-Eyed Jacks" (1961) is one of Brando's best and he both directed & starred, did some if the writing too.
