Thierry never speaks to his wife and yet...

Thierry is what Québecois call "un taiseux". He rarely speaks, except in the argument with his fellow union leader, and when answering questions.
When he is at home, he never exchanges a single word with his wife. And yet both manage to convey the image of a couple who stand completely united in the face of life's difficulties. To convey the alchemy of the couple without words is a great achievement of the director. He does this a.o. by showing the "repas en famille" (meals in family), only a happy couple and family can have such peaceful moments around the dinner table. And they still love dancing rock and roll after so many years. I can visualise Thierry in his twenties, with leather jacket and metal chains, and she with wild haircut. Oy may be as a union member, fighting al sorts of battles. Twenty something years later they have calmed down, but still enjoy dancing with each other. Remarkable...

good observation(s) :) i thought the marriage was the best thing in this movie. Warm and (full of) understanding. A real feeling of togetherness, being together for a long, long time.

The best parts about this movie was the family time as you see him happy and not showing any stress, and loved the dance class.

Agree with one poster about scenes ... agree they were too long but maybe they were trying to show how bored he was while doing the interviews, courses, job in general.

I would have liked to have seen a backbone in the last scene and him standing up for a cause if not necessarily for himself.

I thought that's what he did at the end. He walked out on the job, didn't he? He leaves the room with the cashier, goes and changes and drives away. It seemed he'd had enough with the little security Nazis running around trying to entrap people with stupid "thefts".
