Washing Machines

Did they have them all in the back of that pickup? The whole laundromat story made no sense.

reply

As an idea it's not bad. In rushes like this the people who get rich are usually the ones providing goods and services to the workers, not the workers themselves.

But the set up made no sense. Didn't he say they were going to start a couple of laundromats? With what, like the four or six machines they could fit in the back of a pickup? And where the hell were they going to put these washing machines? Appparently they didn't have any storefront space lined up.

Unless Alpert's covered in bacon grease, I don't think Hugo can track anything.

They had one machine and a dream!

reply

Actually, I think they had five or six.

At one point they showed the wife staring longingly into a laundromat. Maybe that was the space they envisioned? Or were they going to lease upon arrival. One thing they've got in ND is space.

reply

There's plenty of land, but in the boom region there's a real shortage of housing and, I'd assume, business space.

reply

Good point. Sam Brannan became California's first millionaire during the '49 gold rush by selling about $5,000 worth of goods a day to prospectors. Other examples would be Levi Strauss and John Studebaker.

reply

In the beginning of the boom you had to wait hours for a machine at the 1 or 2 local laundromats in town or go at like 3am so yes, the whole laundromat story made perfect sense. They used to bring in enclosed trailers with washers and driers as well as showers. There are still "man camps" there today.

Overall I liked the premiere, it's just a shame the opening minute was the worst of it.

They have no store to put the handful of machines they purchased with all the money their friends and family lent them.

I've heard of putting the cart before the horse, but this is like they purchased horseshoes without a cart nor a horse.

As a business, it made sense and wasn't bad. But putting them in the back of their truck was the stupid part. I go to college far away from home and have the heavy stuff shipped, so I didn't get why they didn't do the same thing. Plus it didn't seem like they had a place to live lined up either. I mean come on you decide to move to a new city and have nothing already planned?

Shipping stuff is expensive. Idk how you do it.

It's kinda high but also better than having to drive it all across the country. Especially since I didn't even drive across the country except for when I first went to college: Going from Wisconsin to California is a 20 plus hour drive! Plus I've found that it's cheaper to only ship what you really need and just simply buy the rest when I . The heaviest and more expensive thing I had shipped was my desk because it's a one of a kind heirloom. I simply bought the other stuff I needed.

Damn. I get it though. Not quite as long, but I go to school in MS and am from MD. But then I drive at the start/end of semesters. I fly for little breaks.

Living where I do, we find a LOT of stuff for free/cheap so driving it down when I go, makes it worth it.

reply

They could just wait until they got there and then buy the washers/dryers. Then there would be no shipping cost or boyfriend flipping the truck risk.

He leaves the machines out in the field, AND doesnt try to get his truck up and running? WTF? A little slow to begin with, when they were dealing with the po folk, but since they stuck it "rich", it perked up! Hope they continue to shine on the rich folk, and avoid dealing with the little people!

I liked the main actors and characters and even the premise but it did feel rushed and like you said things were just left like the business they first planned.

yeah, I watched this last night and agree...you move to a new town to start a new business, your resources are apparently limited even though you have two successful laundromats elsewhere..you do not even have a place to live lined up..instead of going there, getting a basic toehold, getting your site/store or whatever you actual operation is going to be set up in framework, then either fetching the machines or having someone else truck them in for you..

you load up a pickup with six cumbersome washing machines..

then in an area heavy with semi traffic, you drive along not looking where you are going as two semis converge on you on a collision course..at last minute, you swerve off road wiping out truck and contents..
the only thing which tallies is the consistent sheer stupidity of every element..

then, in town that night, with a fight brewing between still armed hunter/s and zealots of the local Native American industry, you stand there with your adored young wife in Tombstone waiting for the potential shooting to start and stray bullets to begin flying less than 10 metres away..
