Document plot?

Can somebody explain the plot of this movie? Martin's father sends him to visit his widowed grandmother to get a document of some kind (what sort of document?) The grandmother is estranged from the father (for what reason?) and refuses to give Martin the document. So Martin goes and gets it from the cousin. Later Martin denies having received the document. Can somebody explain what's going on here? Maybe you have to know something about Brazilian law? Or is this just a MacGuffin to get Martin and Tomaz out of town together so they can have sex?

After one viewing I too would be hard pressed to explain the plot. The document thing confused me as well. Normally I'd watch a film a second time to figure things like this out (and there are a lot of things to figure out) but the jerky camera work and fuzzy/off-center images were too distracting and off-putting to bear a second time.

I think the document had to do with the ownership of the house. Martin's grandfather died and so i'm guessing that there was some sort of transfer of assets because of that. The grandmother says something to the effect that if he ( Martins father) wants to take money from the family he will have to come himself to get it.
I was confused by the phone call as well but I interpreted it to mean that Martin left the paper with the family once he understood its meaning. He chose the family he had very little contact with over his connection with his father, which was tenuous and made him feel fearful. The family obviously felt that the house and property rightfully belong to them, and I think when Martin learned the details he agreed.
