Jobs could be a Jerk. Didn't we already know that?

I'm baffled at the anger some have expressed towards this doc.

From what I've been reading (I've yet to see the film), most of the 'revelations' have already been pretty widely reported, and all were included in Walter Isaacson's authorized biography "Jobs."

Even the made-for-TV "Pirates of Silicon Valley" portrayed Jobs as a grade-A jerk. And that was made in 1999.

So what's with all the hard feelings?

Jobs is idolized by a group of followers that refuse to acknowledge the real man. Some people are already rewriting the effect his beliefs had on the circumstances of his death to make it look like he didn't make an poor decisions about his health care. Reminders that he could be a royal jerk and was extremely self absorbed are a good thing. It keeps people grounded and cuts down on the talk about how he could do no wrong.

Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon, and the truth.

Comparing Steve Jobs and Apple against Bill Gates and Microsoft, makes Gates look like an saint. He gives insanely much to charity even out of his own pocket, Jobs on the other hand did not and stopped Apple fro doing any also. I dont like any of them, but must admit that atleast Gates uses alot of his money for good.

Its so easy now, I wonder how Gates made all that money? he destroyed Netscape and other browsers, it's funny he has become a philanthropist now.

reply

Obviously, you have to take out the competition. It's like that with every business. So you're saying that Apples proprietary HDMI cables for $60 was good honest business? Tech reviewers ripped it apart and found the same identical components in a $10 HDMI.

I swear the Aholes at Best Buy are forced to try to sell you a Mac, they get really pissed when you're not interested. "But it has an aluminum skeleton, don't you want that", no not for *beep* $1500 when I can get something for 1/3 that's just as fast. I have 3 computers, 1 from 6 years ago, 1 from 3 years ago, 1 from 6 months ago, all working fine and neither ones are Apple products.

I think it's fair enough if people idolize Jobs or Gates for that matter. They have both proven they know how to make money so there is surely a lot of skill to admire there.

I don't think anyone is a fan of the business practices of those companies, except from a tactical point of view. They both did sly things all the time, basically playing off the ignorance of users.

Gates has been acknowledge for basically stopping polio in most of the world. He's a good man. Big tipper from what I've heard and most of the people didn't even know who he was. I remember he was taking a taxi and it was down pouring that night, had a good friendly conversation with the cab driver and tipped him something like $15,000.

From an article I have read also, Apple does not pay its taxes. There is a loop hole in the system and their finances are done overseas to avoid full US tax laws. Jobs is an *beep* he has never done any good with his wealth and power.

Kill:
The Gates Foundation has helped immensely in the worldwide fight against polio. But there are other non-government agencies that have been in the fight much longer, and proved the concept.

These include:
Rotary International
World Health Organization
UNICEF
CDC

Now, there are just three countries that polio is still seen in: Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Nigeria. It is critical that these three join the rest of the world in eradicating polio. Join one of these organizations in helping the fight!

Regarding taxes, Apple most assuredly follows US tax law. THere are a number of other US-based companies that pay little of no US taxes; however, they do pay taxes in other countries where their profit are earned. The issue is US tax rates and tax law, not Apple.

reply

Well the thing is, FBwillians, from what I've read about the taxes. Apple as $102 billion in offshore accounts that can not be taxed on interest. Sure the company probably pays it's shares of taxes with the profits it makes, but a 5% interest rate on $102 billion is not taxable which equals to a whole lot of money.

Fun facts about Gates, he makes $128 a second from interest off his $79 billion dollars, just imagine what that $102 billion is making that can't be taxed by the United States. Gates also donated $23 billion in 2013 to his foundation. It's the 2nd largest charity and the largest private charity. Government agencies are what they are, Government. Gates basically helped eliminate polio with his own dollars, not a government fund.

It only proofs he earns a lot.

Lets compare it to a "normal" person donating 5% of his anual income of 20000$ instead of Bill Gates donating 50% of his 4 billion$.

One guy is left with 19k$ (who can't deduct his donation).

The other guy is left with 2 billion$(who can partly deduct his donation).

Who is the biggest benefactor?Surely the guy that gives something away he will notice when he needs or wants to buy something. Not the guy that gives a lot more but doesn't notice it because he already has everything he needs and more then he wants.

Bill Gates is no saint. His unbelievable wealth is the only reason he gives away so much money and a poor person giving a dollar to a hobo is ten times the hero then Bill Gates desperately tries to be.

In fact if someone makes so much money of interest alone they should tax him for 100% and use the proceeds to enable worldwide healthcare for everybody.Or at least try.

Same goes for Steve Jobs of course. He should've been taxed a whole lot more and on top of that he should've taxed himself and give a whole lot more.

Giving something without noticing you gave something is meaningless anyway.

This bit makes it clear that you're just being spiteful.

Bill Gates isn't a saint, but he isn't a terrible person either. He has done a lot of good works through his philanthropy. I doubt that any of the people helped by his charity would say that his efforts were "meaningless".

In fact Bill would agree with you that no person needs so much wealth. That's why he has been one of the leading proponents - along with Warren Buffet and others - of encouraging billionaires to give away their entire fortunes.

Trust me, Gates may not have been a "jerk" or a "bass-turd", but he was just as ruthless as any other millionaire/billionaire businessman.

Well said.

Many people did not even know that MS Word and MS Excel were first invented by Microsoft for software applications for Apple's first Graphical User Interface Software for LISA and Macintosh before Gates and company "reversed engineered" (better term would be copy or imitated) Apple's first Graphical User Interface and called them their very own MS WINDOWS.

Apple fans want a complete re-write of the man who gave them the i-products such as iMac,iPad,iPhone,iTunes and many others.

Stop spreading this nonsense that you heard somewhere, neither of them invented GUI.

Question remains the same how did they made so much money in the first place? I remember the nineties when there was a internet browser war going on and role of Microsoft.

reply

what the f , i'm not a fan either of them but regardless his personality or whatso ever gates gives out his money while jobs reluctant to do so , it doesn't matter if that amount of money can't make a dent in his bank account or he actually cares for charity as there are tons of rich people don't give out even the 5 percent of their wealth
you may judge the bad deeds upon their intentions as the circumstances may/do affect the offense such as killing someone out of self defense and out of intention but i can't fathom why would someone try to smudge a good deed such as charity whether it is out of showing off or sincerity

reply

Lots of companies have tons of money overseas, and they paid taxes on it overseas. With US tax law that money would be taxed AGAIN if they brought it back. Apple does a lot of business overseas.

Some companies also set up operations so they can take advantage of quirks in the US tax law. Why pay any more tax than you have to.? US has very high taxes for companies -- higher than in most other countries. Higher taxes makes it harder for US companies to compete.

That is unfortunate. Nobody is perfect and Jobs never saw himself as a saint or anything close to perfect and gave his biographer full reign to tell it like he saw it.

Bill Gates and Microsoft, makes Gates look like an saint. He gives insanely much to charity even out of his own pocket, Jobs on the other hand did not and stopped Apple fro doing any also.

Cite your sources little man.

I dont like any of them, but must admit that atleast Gates uses alot of his money for good.

Gates does have a large charity foundation bearing his name, though I'm not really sure if he has ultimately done any good - in tech or anything else. Who knows, maybe some day he will have a break through. Gates did and does have a lot more money that Jobs and Gates have given some of this away - so I guess that makes Gates a better man.

reply

Give me a break, its well known facts. Grow up and stop calling people you dont know stuff. And btw its been stated in news several times, if Gates keeps spending money on charity at his current rate, then he will be broke 2023.

3 options.

1. You love a tech guru for his tech side. What he has done in technology world only.

2. You love a tech guru only for his philanthropistic, human side.

3. You love a tech guru cause of his both sides.

Its up to you.

I usually don't care about tech guru private life and donations but when I know you are not only not helping anyone with your money thats sitting in the banks and is enough for your family to live rich for 10.000 years but you force apple to stop any donations and charity work. For me he is a disgrace to humanity. Nothing less. Thanks for the multi touch smartphone, it has helped humanity tremendously cure cancer, aids and such.

"Mr. Jobs’s views on charity are unclear since he rarely talks about it. But in 1997, when Mr. Jobs returned to Apple, he closed the company’s philanthropic programs. At the time, he said he wanted to restore the company’s profitability. Despite the company’s $14 billion in profits last year and its $76 billion cash pile today, the giving programs have never been reinstated."

Yet Jobs wasn't even a tech guru. His only talent was spotting talent and intimidating/bullying them to hold on to them. He could spot a parade from a mile away, jump in front of it, and then claim he was not only leading the parade, but created it, lol.

The hard feelings come from the fact that a lot of Apple product users are still in denial. Anyway, here an article to prove it.

16 Examples Of Steve Jobs Being A Huge Jerk

P.S. This was based on the authorized biography of Steve Jobs written by Walter Isaacson.

A large segment of the population can't tell the difference between their phone and their penis so they take any criticism of Apple quite personally. ;)

There's a difference between a jerk an a scumbag. The real question is why Apple fanboys keep worshipping the man? He was no different than any greedy CEO, except he had charisma.

If I don't reply, you're most likely on my ignore list

reply

I've not bought a single apple product. I've only watched documentaries and interviews of the man out of curiosity. I think people want to view him as a jerk (much like zuckerberg in the social network) because they want to live in a world where such success is for jerks, cheaters and greedy people. I only found a very human, wise and respectful man with a narrow focus but still a positive outlook on life: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYfNvmF0Bqw
