There needs to be more to the main character than being gay

His storlines are gonna get old real quick if that's it. I understand it's an important struggle but I saw the three aired episodes back to back and the gay angle got a bit tiresome.

If he's gonna be one note he should be a side character and make way for the parents to take more plot time.

I agree. I've lost interest in him and prefer it when the other characters are on. This show will get cancelled soon if that's his only defining characteristic.

reply

Seriously. We get it, he's gay. There are tons of gays on tv that are hilarious and great characters too. Kenny, is not yet one of them.

But in the context of the show, that's part of the joke. Look at the other characters.

They are the ones who actually have all kinds of psychological and relationship problems, but they've made him the symbol of the family's "abnormality".

In contrast to them, he's just a regular guy who happens to be gay. He's not a straight man but he's the "straight man" in the comic sense.

He can be the straight character and have more than one defining characteristic. I find gay jokes from the Modern Family characters funny and they also have plenty of other stuff going on in their lives.

I actually like Kenny and find him endearing. He reminds me of Marshall from the show United States of Tara.

I think they are trying to make it, dare I say, kid-friendly. I mean that in the sense of making future generations of gay people feel that they are okay, not-to-be shamed, and acceptable. Wish this show was on when I was young.

Really? That's funny because all of the other characters are straight and they talk about it all the time but I don't get tired of it. Kenny goes on one date and all of a sudden that's too much? If people can't handle a show were the main character is gay and has the nerve to talk about it maybe its not for them. There are plenty of shows (like 95 percent) were the main characters are all straight to pick from.

I would actually find it less annoying if Kenny had a boyfriend he loved and they had other interests/adventures that they had together. It just seems super repetitive for Kenny to go "I'm gay. this is so confusing!" every single episode. I don't know a single thing about Kenny the character beyond his sexual orientation.

Agreed. The show seems to be about Kenny coming out and his struggle to do so. I think the brother was supposed to be anorexic but that's all squared away now after one episode. The daughter is odd but sensible. The parents are divorcing but that seems to be the secondary story to Kenny being gay. It truly does seem to be the Kenny is gay show. That's really not an envelope pushing idea anymore, gay character are common. Kenny finding his way so ackwardly in every episode is not realistic in my opinion.

Hopefully it finds it's balance in the next few episodes. I like the premise, the execution just isn't great so far.
