The Real O'Neals: This freshman comedy starring Martha Plimpton as the Catholic mother of a gay teenage son has been picked up for season 2. The show joins a long list of ABC's successful comedy formula of quirky but lovable families, including The Middle, Modern Family, black-ish, The Goldbergs and Fresh Off the Boat.

Whohoo! I'm so glad this show got renewed! I've really been enjoying it.

I wonder whether they take it somewhere new. I liked the light-heartedness of the show and the awkwardly unspectacular view on coming out, but I am not sure 12 more episodes of the same really would do it. They have to take the subplots to another level.
