"Not Everything Is About You Being Gay"

They won me back a little bit this week with this joke. I swear that I said this criticism to my wife as I watched the first episodes of the season.

I've got to agree.

Don't get me wrong, I'm enjoying Kenny's journey and look forward to his character having all sorts of new experiences throughout the course of the season. But the show runs the risk of being far too focused on Kenny, at its detriment. Especially when the Kenny storyline is awful. (see the Halloween episode)

This week's show was great. I hope it's a sign of more balance yet to come.

Kenny is just a two-dimensional, one-note character. He's gay ... and nothing else. Everything IS about him being gay. And his "gayness" is just another mincing cookie-cutter version of gay that the media keeps pushing down our throats. Of my gay friends, most might be considered a little effeminate but they'd throat punch Kenny.

Best gay character on TV? Max from "Happy Endings". He was a guy who happened to be gay. It was far from the entirety of his personality.

I think it plays on stereotypes a little too much, but at the same time people need to make sure they don't reframe from being anti feminine. What they should do is introduce another gay character that isn't feminine. I think the show that does that best is Eyewitness on USA, they don't do the stereotype stuff.

That's a good idea. I suspect they may be going that direction with the casting of Sean Grandillo, but as his episodes haven't yet aired, I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Sidenote: I freaking love Eyewitness! I wish more people were watching it live. USA hasn't been promoting it nearly enough, and I'm worried it won't get a second season.
