What's with everybody starving and cooking rats etc? Are you seriously telling me the government cant do food drops in the middle of a massive city? the show is a good idea..but they've gone about it the wrong way. So much potential wasted...

Challenging to accomplish
On the one hand, you're right. If you stay in your house, and stick to sedentary pursuits like reading, drawing, computer games, etc, you can get by with a much lower calorie intake than usual, and stretch your food out for quite a while.
On the other hand, food drops wouldn't work. The gangsters would just take the food and make people pay a fortune for it. Anybody low on cash at the moment would be out of luck.

It's easy to secure drop sites with snipers on top of the container wall around it, or with gunship helicopters or drones. They can also deliver some machine guns or even sentry guns on top of APC to the cops inside so they can easily protect the drop site.
It's just lazy writing.
