Fathers Day...

!!SPOLIER but just for Fathers Day Segment!!

..had SOOOO much potential what with the built up tension via a slow momentum reveal, outstanding cinematography, ominous sound, good acting (not only from Actress playin Daughter but also Fathers VOICE ACTOR), story, Directing (the photo of Dad was worth the price of admission alone; creepy) etc...but I swear 1/2 way in at the height of the nail biting I thought there is NO WAY the climax can be as good as this build up; though just a short the ending has become a WHITE ELEPHANT so-to-speak. Unfortunately I was right :/ Too many unanswered questions. The Dad saying somethin about havin only ONCE CHANCE TO MEET HIM...him who? - Was that Daddy in the chair? If so (or not) then huh? I'll still follow Anthony Scott Burns as I'm sure he'll just get better. this All in though...it, along with EASTER, were the 2 BEST segments. Hands down HALLOWEEN was the WORSE, which looked like a bad bad bad bad student film!..ironically by probably the Director with the most (undeserved) notoriety on the bill (phlegm hock)..Kevin Smith. My god...after TUSK one would imagine KS would only find Producers willing to bankroll him graduates from Helken Keller University (think about it)..but sadly nope.

Reminded me of THE NAMELESS, a Spanish Horror Film I forget to mention. Without giving anything away one doesnt learn 5 min in, it had a semi similar story (Mother seeks Daughter) and physical setting (dilapidated structure) on a lonely beach. Def check it out if not seen!

There is also an added resonance that the voice of the father is provided by actor Michael Gross who was the paternal head of the household, Steven Keaton, in wholesome 1980s sitcom Family Ties! Definitely my favourite segment of the whole film.

I just rented this , thanks for that suggestion !

Agreed, I thought this was the best one but had a horrible ending. On top of everything you said, if this creature trapped inside the circle of salt that it showed, why did they do the horror-film "creature walks into sight for a split second" trope? It couldn't have done that.

Maybe put spoilers in subject line please.

Maybe don't visit the message boards before you've seen the movie?

This was the one story that was weak..didnt get it...he was a ghost?

reply

I'm guessing demonic.

The entire portion of Father's Day was done very well with good acting and pacing and felt very personal (her listening to the tape) it felt like you're in her shoes entire time until the reveal of the father.

reply

I agree, it was the best segment of the movie, alto ending was ... dunno, just kinda there.

Unlike rest of the segments, which were heavily campy and heavy on dark humor, this felt really different. It had serious and dark tone and felt very personal.

I actually wouldn't mind to watch full feature of something like that.

I thought he was a vampire. The religious references, the salt, the "nosferatu" tyoe reveal. I assumed he was going to force her to become one too, that's why her Mum never told her the truth, to stop him from getting her.

Was really sad.. I have a little girl and it killed me.. I guess it was really good though because horror is supposed to unnerve you..

This was hands down the best segment for me but I agree the ending was just a bit disappointing. I would have rather had the dad sitting in the chair and she sees him and in a split second they're both gone. I assumed since they showed the planets aligning that it was his one chance in heaven to either see her or she could go with him to some sort of afterlife. It was tense and slightly creepy enough that it could have had a happier ending and still be considered a thriller.

I didn't realize the dad's voice was Michael Gross though, somehow makes it even better. I also loved the fact that the mom was trying to call her, almost like she knew this might happen and was trying to warn here but it was too late.

Really emotional segment.

reply

In my opinion, that was not her father. Because it showed the alignment of planets 3~4 times during the segment, I believe that she was abducted by an alien...
Another thing, is that the way he recorded the audio, telling her that was her opportunity to met him, exactly when the two planets where aligned, was another thing that made me thinking about that hypothesis...

I wonder what her mother would tell her, if she picked up the phone...
Maybe that her father was really dead, and she was being scammed?

Anyway, best segment of the movie, so far !!

Girlfriend and I watched HOLIDAYS this evening and somewhat agree that Father's Day probably the best segment in the anthology. Yet, we also agree with those who have said the ending was too anti-climactic and vague. I don't mind guessing, but there are a number of possible explanations and given the excellent, dramatic build-up, and give that Father even said about 2/3 of the way in something like 'everything will be explained', I hoped for a little more.

Unlike others, we did not feel a tremendous disparity between the episodes, as some did. In fact, Kevin's HALLOWEEN, despite the weak acting, was much more than 1 of 10. It's a hoot that lightened the atmosphere, especially after the emotional Mothers and Fathers Days.

This was my favorite segment (with 'Easter' being next), but the ending has left me guessing!

Here's what I thought happened...

When the woman was a little girl, her father had disappeared. Her mother never told her why or explained where he went (did he die? Did he leave them? Who knows. She wants to believe he died of some sickness and didn't just take off, so that becomes part of her story). This bothered the girl well into her adulthood and remained her big, unanswered question. Now she is being haunted by this vampiric entity that is trying to possess her and get her to agree to go with it. It calls up her deepest desire - to find out what happened to her dad - and uses it to trick her into giving in to it. Because she thought the voice was her dad giving her the answers she's pined for for her entire life, she gave in readily. Because dad wasn't actually there, the only way he could "talk" to her was through this tape. This was why her adventure at the beach coincided with the voice on the tape - because it was all in her head, being "spoken" to her by the entity. So the creature made the woman's subconscious tell her everything she had always wanted to hear from/about her dad - why he left, where he was now, etc - but without giving her actual answers (since she doesn't know, it can't "tell" her). The trip (whether real or in her head) opened her up and left her vulnerable for the being to possess her. She had to say "Yes" to him, so he convinced her that he was her father. Saying yes to dad = saying yes to the entity. Since her mother had never told her anything about why her father left, her subconscious couldn't give her any answers from mom's phone call, either. Once she was nearly in the entity's spell, she broke away for the tiniest of seconds and saw a flash of the monster, but wanted to believe that it was really her dad so badly that she overlooked what she saw and gave in. Then we, as viewers, get to see her "dad" for what he really is.

I don't know if this explanation makes sense or not. It's just what I was thinking.

I've got two good posts in me and I just wrote my third...
