Why was Vi completely overlooked to receive the land?

She and Ernest were siblings. First of all why did Ernest inherit the entire farm. Secondly, why after Ernest's death didn't the land revert back to Vi? Seems like she has more of a right to it by birth than Ernest's kids IMO.

Didn't Ernest own the land outright? Or am I missing something

Ernest purchased the land.

Vi explained to the children that the land was purchased by Ernest's grandfather during the Depression when the white families were financially strapped (Ernest wouldn't have been born yet). When they got back on their feet, they wanted it back, particular because of its' soil quality and strategic position among the farms. They were relentless and ruthless in their attempts to reacquire it, and were particularly incensed by the fact that it was owned by a descendant of one of the family's slaves.
At this point Ernest had inherited the farm and therefore became the brunt of their machinations. Vi blamed them for her brother's eventual physical collapse.
My best guess is that Vi didn't inherit because the family wanted to keep the farm intact. This is not uncommon among farm families or those who own a family business. Other heirs are compensated in other ways.

Violet didn't inherit the land because clearly Violet was not interested in farming the land. In much the same way Charley and Nova were not interested either. They've had a change of heart now but a huge part of that was due to Ralph Angel's resistance at first.

I think Aunt Vi got the house/land that she's living on.

She probably wasn't as interested as Ernest was to farm the land.

But I've always wondered how a small town waitress could afford such a house and a little land on top of that.

Her boss Clive at the diner once told her "that's your husband's house" to which Vi replied "well he ain't coming back to get it so it's mine".
