What do you think of the choice of Sam Claflin and Rachel Weisz ?

Personally, though I like Sam Claflin, I don't think he's be suited for the part of Philip. I think he's more touching as kind guys, not as caracterial men. And Rachel Weisz... well, I don't know her much, I've seen her only in the Wizard of Oz but I don't find her charismatic enough to be Rachel. I would have prefered Mark Ryder and Emilia Clarke.

What do you think about that ?

Interesting cause most people thought Rachel and Williams were the best thing in that so so movie. And to be honest with you It's not the best movie to judge both actress.

Rachel has a great list of movies and won an Oscar and a Golden Globe for The Constant Gardener but in my opinion the movies where I liked her more were probably The Mummy (1/2)and The Brothers Bloom, she was quirky, funny and charismatic there. Her best roles are probably The Deep Blue Sea, Agora, The Whistleblower, Youth and The Lobster.

About this remake, i don't know Sam's work but I know Rachel's so she's always a good choice and she has an eye for good roles but I never saw the original. That said I can't tell you if she's gonna be better, if she's wrong or not for the part, I just know she's mesmerizing when she is acting and I'll probably enjoy it.

Rachel Weisz not charismatic enough? Wow. But I guess if you only saw one movie of hers than it makes sense though in Oz she was pretty much off the charts charismatic.
I think she is pretty perfect to reprise De Havilland's role. I'm not sure about Sam. I think that they should have cast someone with more experience as a character actor, especially in period thriller/drama. Sam has no such experience and the difference between him and Weisz talent wise could ruin this remake.

I love both Sam and Rachel and I think they'll be excellent. Rachel's a very versatile actress so she should pull it off ;)

Won't come anywhere near matching Olivia de Haviland & Richard Burton.

reply

Rachel will but nobody can match Burton. That was a beautiful version.

I'll have to refrain from saying until I see the movie. I do love the 1952 version, and thought the casting was wonderful. What this will turn out to be remains to be seen.

I didn't know Sam Claflin until I saw him in "Me before you", I knew Rachel Weisz, and I am happy with the choice of both actors. I haven't seen any previous "My cousin Rachel" movie, so I will not be comparing. I have read the book many years ago and really enjoyed it, I have to say that both actors fit the image I have in my mind for Philip and Rachel.

I think Weiss is too old for the role.

I don't remember the book very well, I read it about 15 years ago, but cousin Rachel is supposed to be quite mature, she's a widow, and she remarries Philip's uncle. To get the difference of age between her and Philip right, she should be at least 10 years older than Philip. Philip at the end of the novel is 25, she should be at least 35 or older, I'm ok with the choice of a little more mature actors for both the characters.
Who would you have liked as cousin Rachel?

reply

Exactly. That is one of the issues in the books in that he is considered a "boy" compared to Rachel.

reply

Weisz is closer to 50 than 40, and imo sems too old for Rachel. Emily Blunt, Abbie Cornish, Romola Garai, Rebecca Hall, Ruth Wilson, Hayley Atwell. Andrea Riseborough, Charlotte Riley, Sophia Myles are More of an appropriate age.

reply

I just saw the trailer and I thought Weisz looks good in the role, I think her image fits the contest, maybe the fact that she is older than the actresses mentioned, makes her look "less modern".

We don't always have to have girls in their 20's and 30's playing every role. If they were elegant and mature like they were in the 30's and 40's maybe. But for this role I am happy with someone older.

Rachel W. always looked younger than her age. Most people wouldn't think she's 45+. You only know it because her dob is for everyone to see. I think she fits Rachel, the character is considerably older than Philip.

I like them both a lot. Both are handsome and very talented. I´m looking forward for this movie.

Everything Weisz has done is great but you could start watching "The Mummy" to get some idea of her work. She has a wide range.
