I'm amazed they weren't caught after the first kidnapping

I'm aware that the dad thought he can do everything because of his connections, but
-Making the kidnapping calls from public phones where dozens of people are passing by?
-Picking up the money like 10 seconds after they dropped the bag?
-Sitting in cars watching the victims family like 8 meters away? Especially in the abandoned forest, how obvious can it get, that they are involved?

In real life they couldn't be this irresponsible, so why was the movie?

Your comments make no sense. Public pay phones were in those days like burner phones, the main phone used by criminals.
As far as picking up ransom picking it up immediately is a good idea otherwise someone else might grab it. They still have the kidnapped person so they won't be followed

They could use public phone booths, instead of ones in buildings. And I doubt someone else might pick up the ransom money in the middle of the forest...
