Nicholas Cage is Great. The Movie Is Not.

Unless you are a hardcore Nicholas Cage fan, there honestly isn't any reason to watch this movie. He's great in the role, but there isn't enough substance here for a feature length movie. After the first 30 minutes, it's pretty clear that the writers are completely relying on Cage's character to carry the movie and his shtick gets old quickly. It eventually just becomes a collection of scenes with typical slapstick humor and gets boring really fast. I was excited when I first heard about this movie going into production considering the director and Cage being involved, but this felt like a completely wasted opportunity for a movie that could've been a lot funnier and more exciting. Unless you are a hardcore Nicholas Cage fan, don't bother. Not hard at all to see why it went straight to DVD.

Yeah Cage really carries the movie. But the story is really about the character. The story of an insane fool and how people still like him. How a totally deranged person can still somehow convince people that he knows what he is doing and they assist him in a way.

I've never read Don Quichotte (only seen the kids cartoons) but there is an obvious connection there. And maybe The Idiot from Dostoyevsky.
