Not Pakistan.

I understand the story takes place in an exaggerated reality and is completely fictional. -but judging solely from the trailer, i hope that such an inaccurate depiction of Pakistan is somehow contextualised within the premise of the film and isn't just so, because the filmmakers, with their millions of dollars in budget were too lazy/ignorant to look up what life really is like there. I mean at least do a simple google search about where most of your film is set. I can understand why filmmakers would be hesitant on travelling here themselves, but its no excuse to misrepresent a country with its own language, culture and people in such a blatant and misleading way.

A few discrepancies can be ignored of course, but what i saw in the trailer was completely not Pakistan. It wasnt even remotely close. In fact it looked like some arab-middle eastern country. Everything was off, from what the place looked like, to what the people were wearing, to how they spoke, to the general atmosphere. There is no desert in Islamabad, theres nothing that remotely resembles a desert in Islamabad, in fact the nearest thing you can even call a desert is hundreds of miles away. Yet- the trailer depicts Islamabad like its some place in the middle of the Sahara desert.

Im tired of hollywood mustering up every negative stereotype they can think of about this part of this part of the world, throwing it all together to make this imaginary land that they use for every movie thats ever been set here. Its not funny anymore, Its just pure ignorance and it has to stop.

These guys are either too lazy or too naive and believe everything their media says..!.just look what they did in Homeland..!.it was f@cking ridiculous how NOT Islamabad, Islamabad was in Homeland..!

reply

At any point during the trailer, or during Homeland does the show freeze and run a message saying all Americans actually believe this is Islamabad? Stop making generalizations about Americans, calling us lazy and naive because filmmakers made some generalizations about Pakistan.

reply

Uh the entire season of Homeland is set in "Islamabad"..i think a text did display the location at the beginning..!..and some generalizations ?..some ?..hah.!.dude i live here alright..they didn't get 1 single thing right..even 1.!..that is ridiculously lazy..!!!

upgraded ? you mean downgraded..!..what me and the OP are saying is that this is a continous theme that everybody seems to follow in Hollywood. First Homeland (a very serious drama) and now this. It really tells us what kind of picture you guys are trying to sell of "Pakistan" to the "American" audiences..i mean "Pakistan is a terrorism infested, backwards, religious third world country" right ?..
When Arrival mistook Shanghai for Hong Kong in their poster, the people behind the movie had to apologize..that was just a poster, this is a full on depiction of an entire city..!

reply

"Stop making generalizations about Americans" So most your country isnt voting for either a criminal or a lunatic for next president then? yeah im just gona go ahead and agree with the OP on this one, 99% of your country act like they are brainless, kids shooting people, even little children albeit by accident but jesus have you seen how many there are each year? the fact if you used the american flag for anything other than putting on a pole most the country would go ape s**t lol country has zero sense of humour, face it.

reply

Guff, agreed. Let's go shoot a film in a hostile nation. Dumb. It was filmed in morocco.

reply

I just watched it and it's awful. I mean the only thing Pakistani is "Aalo ka paratha". I know it's supposed to be dumb but they could have used India as location to make it look a bit like Pakistan. Islamabad is supposed to be one of the most beautiful cities in world and people living in Pakistan are supposed to speak Urdu, not arabic.

reply

americans dont want to beh called fatasses and lazy. they think their culture is "right" even if they are fed with wrong info and portrayal... they actually think it is true. that is a general label. huh

reply

Ok, what's your point, genius? What country doesn't think their culture and way of life is the best? All countries do! If you don't like seeing the US act like that, only watch movies made by your own country.

reply

Other than major faux pas of location in homeland as it was shot in jordan, almost all actors playing pakistanis, apart from the extras were indians. Also their dress code can be clearly seen to be of mixed arab/indian.

reply

And the Indians they use in their films don't look like Pakistanis at all.
There's no resemblance if you look close enough their skin is very different from Pakistanis' and accent is also different.

all Muslims are backward degenerates who speak Arabic and go boom after saying "Allahu Akbar"!

Uh, if the shoe fits. We are talking about the same people, right? The ones who behead people? Who condemn a man to death for writing a book? Who blow up people for drawing a cartoon? Who fly planes into buildings because they will be rewarded with imaginary virgins in an imaginary land? The ones who don't let women drive? The people that follow a book that clearly states, "all nonbelievers should be killed"?

And don't give me that "it's just a small minority" apologist nonsense. Entire countries follow Sharia law. I can't remember the last time I saw a "moderate" Muslim apologize for the deeds of these insane people.

If you honestly don't know that this situation exists, that's cool. Just watch a documentary or two and get back to me. If you do, and you accept this insanity in the name of "cultural differences", you are a traitor not only to your country but also to basic human rights.

reply

What an ignorant rant. I don't want to waste my time replying to someone who has preformed opinions that aren't grounded in reality. First read the Quran, then read Sharia law, and then talk with a general group of Muslims. If you aren't too far into this pit of anti-Islamism, you might just realize how uninformed you are.

Such ignorance.

Some folks want to convince us that Pakistan is a nice, modern country. Yet, Pakistan still has one of the highest illiteracy rates in the world. In tribal areas, female literacy is 9.5%. For comparison, in ancient Rome about 15% of Italians were literate under the Principate. Parts of Pakistan have pre-Middle Age levels of literacy. Let that sink in.

I cringed when someone earlier in this thread wrote that we should read the Quran and then Sharia law. No, thanks. In fact, perhaps Pakistani's should start reading something else than religious texts. How many Pakistani's do you know who have excelled in any field of science? How many Pakistani's do you know who have excelled in art and literature? There are 182 million Pakistani's but what is their legacy?

Let's not forget that this enlightened country was home to Osama Bin Laden. Apparently, he liked it there. That's not a compliment.

Look how modern and tolerant Pakistan society is to people who have a different religion: a couple of months ago 72 people were killed, including 29 children. Their crime: celebrating Easter.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3511528/Dozens-mothers-children-52-killed-suicide-bomber-targeted-Christians-celebrating-Easter-park-Pakistan.html

Any country that has Taliban roaming freely within its territory cannot claim to be modern, sophisticated, tolerant or safe.

There is a reason why ALL movies that are supposed to be set in Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan are NOT actually filmed there: hostility and violence.

To those who live in Pakistan and complain that Hollywood movies are unrealistic because they are shot somewhere else: just make Pakistan a nicer and safer place. Then someday we can have more realistic movies filmed in your country. Win-win.

reply

It is a satire/camedy.Enjoyed it a lot.Who cares it is not real Pakistan. This movie is similar to another Indian movie,Tere Bin Laden.

reply

It seems that he was imagining GOD. I think GOD is not real but some sort of delusional mental disorder Cage's character is going through.
I have not watched the movie. But maybe even him going to Pakistan was a delusion that is why it is like a ignorant american would imagine it to be. More like Afghanistan

reply

It is not pakistan. It is Morocco...
