really liked this film and it's powerful underlining messages, but got two questions as I was slightly confused; Why did Padre Vidal get beat up by those surfer dudes at the beach? Was it something he said or was it something that that catched up to him from the past?
understood that the other padre's & the sister killed the dogs to blame it on Sandokan, but why wouldn't they have any remorse that the one dog mean't so much to Padre Vidal?
The surfers beat up Vidal as they were insulted that he was going to pay them to beat up a man they did not know. When they discovered he was a priest that seemed to anger them even more.
More important to the other priests and the sister was being able to keep their house and existence. They thought Vidal would understand but his words suggested otherwise. I don't think they or the priest counsellor understood how much Rayo meant to Vidal. The dog was his companion.

I think the dog was important to all of them, to varying degrees.
I also think the dog represented their instinctual, unconscious animal natures, which had to be *sacrificed* for all of them to mourn their sins and begin to grow up emotionally.
