Reminds me of The Hallow (2015)

I thought of The Hallow after watching this - a couple who are menaced by a monster or monsters from the woods with a folkloric origin, who seem to be a weird kind of hybrid creature. Both films are fun without necessarily being scary.

Er, sure, in a very broad sense the general plots are slightly similar, I mean, you could make the same broad comparison to literally dozens of horror movies, but The Hallow was a top notch horror movie, one of the best in recent years, with great atmosphere and effects, whereas this is a straight to video sh!tfest with awful, unlikable characters, embarrassingly bad effects, and a story that's 90% time-wasting filler. They're not in the same class at all.

All I said is that Arbor Demon reminded me of The Hallow, especially as a more recent movie. Can you name at least 5 movies out of the "literally dozens" of horror movies that fit the criteria I outline above, that came out in the last 5 years? Just curious.

Your argument also seems to be that they can't be similar because you like one and not the other. That's an argument about effectiveness or preference, not structure.

I actually liked Arbor Demon better than The Hallow. The idea behind the creatures was too muddled - the mixture of science and folklore, fairies and fungus, didn't make much sense. Also, I thought the characters, especially the father, in The Hallow were far less likable. The guy pokes around a decomposing corpse with his child on his back - he's way too cool and arrogant to let anyone stop him. Still, overall, I did find it fun, but only that. I wasn't as impressed with it as you. I would say both are slightly above average films, worth a one-time watch but that's probably it.

By the way, this isn't straight-to-video as I saw it in the theater, and it was shown at festivals last year. Yes, it was released on VOD also but that's not that uncommon nowadays.
