Seems to me he was married or in some other relationship based on the texts. Anyone else have a theory on that ?

He's definitely married. The person she was texting was "Nobody" which was the same person she was texting in the very first episode. In that episode she asked when he was coming to LA and when he replied yes, Sam texted if he was coming alone and didn't get an immediate response so Sam rolled her eyes assuming he wasn't.
