A very ingenious ending...

... and compared to some mystery dramas not TOO far-fetched.

You know, I thought it was great. Until I thought about the facts, and that in real life, when a child goes missing, the parents are the first suspects..

How could the investigators not ask the parents if there was an affair at any point in the relationship/confirm paternity? How could the mother not think that is an important piece of information to offer the police considering the real facts of who takes abducted or missing children..

To me, this plot hole ruined and undermined the whole story. I think the show itself was still good, but I have lost some respect for Harlan Coban.

reply

I'd chalk it up to Marosi's confession, everyone just assumed Jesse was dead.

reply

The trouble was the mother:
Saying she can "tell" if someone is her son. She had decided early on that she could "tell" Jesse was her husband's son, rather than her neighbour's. Because of that she deprived the police of a valuable lead

reply

The whole thing made no sense

Why would Marosi confess to a murder he didn't commit and there was no body?

Slade is just going to commit THREE murders with no consequences?

Pru's husband was a nut job/borderline psychopath. Not that I think Pru's too far off in terms of stability or lack thereof

(The scene with her telling Mark her feelings, was uncomfortable & ill placed beyond words)

Danny allowed Mark entirely too much leeway in the investigation, giving him information before it was confirmed, calling in David's parents when they didn't even know the identity of the young man they thought could have been Jesse

The arguement of Jesse thinking that by placing his DNA @ a 2nd crime scene that would throw off the scent??? In which universe does that make sense?

and you find out you're a missing child and your solution is to spiral out & break into your real family's house to steal family photos?

I also agree with a previous posted about it being unusual for the immediate family to not be suspect, but it does seem the non biological father was arrested in the first investigation

The whole thing called for massive suspension of belief and had no basis in reality or even a parallel universe of reality.

It also felt like they were trying to cram a dozen ideas/themes in, with the hope that one of them would stick.

I really wanted to like this, considering it had OT & Tom Cullen...but if I could apply to get the time I invested back I would...no clue how it has 7 stars AT ALL

reply

And also why would Jesse/Karl have kept his very recognizable backpack after breaking in Julie's and Alan's room ? Very convenient for the rest of the story but not a very bright move, is it ?

reply

Unlikeable, unbelievable characters whose behaviour had no basis in reality whatsoever. Started well and then got worse and worse until by episode five, it had turned into a comedy or a blueprint for how not to do a crime show.

reply

Unfortunately I guessed the ending even down to the characters involved.
It soon became clear that there was a subtext about partenhood, and I even guessed that Karl was probably Jesse

I feel that Harlan Coben is an excellent crime author, but there has so far not been a satisfactory screen version of his work.

Personally I found this series, overlong and too slow. It could have been wound up in 3 episodes rather than 10, and there were far to many irrelevant and overlong digressions from the main story, also too many recaps and subplots.

Add to that the bad music, and overuse of high pitched whine to "heighten" stressful scenes, and it came out as a disappointment and ordeal to me at the end just trying to endure the many slow scenes to let the story conclude.

That ending was insufferable and killed all that preceded it. I was expecting the whole cast to come down to the woods and fell into each other's arms crying and singing "We are the world, we are the children"

Hm.
1)Tom Kallen's character has dark brown eyes. Both of his parents have light blue ones. Its impossible in terms of genetic. It would be possible other way around (very possible, when parents have brown eyes and kids have blue or grey or green). The very (I mean VERY - gen mutation) small chance for him of light brown eyes (hazel) - but he has dark brown eyes.(So, (just faor the laugh - Does Mark have another father?)or Another BIG Gooof
2). In the begining of the series Mark's father tells that Jesse had brown eyes (so, here, in ep2. ,if we had Mark with Grey eyes, we would already assumed that the third party involved in his birth. But I what I am talking about that Karl has grey-blue eyes. Especially in the first episodes. In the end they tried to make his eyes look darker , but... I am sorry, mb it was lat minute decision to make Karl Jesse?or what was that?
