G-rated version of Greased Lightnin'

Originally lyrics still too obscene for 2016 network TV, I guess...

reply

I don't think it's a question of network TV. The show is airing during the traditional "family hour," and I would bet you that a large number of the audience are parents watching this show with their kids and teens. FOX probably wants to play it safe with parents, not ruffle any feathers.

That aside I think it was a great dance/music number.

The original was much better

reply

yet they leave the date rape reference in summer loving...oooooookkkkk

reply

You mean "tell me more tell me more did she put up a fight?" I never thought of it that way.

reply

They assume Danny was successful in his conquest and merely are asking was it easy or not? No rape reference at all.

reply

Meh... so tired of people and their PC attitudes towards everything now.

You want a toe? I can get you a toe, believe me. There are ways, Dude.

date rape reference in summer loving

WOW. There's reaching and then there's whatever THAT was supposed to be. "Date rape"? Gimme a goddamn break.

Be gone hipster feminist. Get off the cross, we need the wood.

reply

Yeah, still can't say *beep* on network tv. Some cable channels you can, but not the main network channels like FOX, CBS, etc.

reply

The dancing was amazing

Actually, they licence the "cleaned up" version of the song with the stageplay, so it wasn't changed just for this production.

Grease mini----the version for middle and high schools

reply

It's also licensed with the full stage show, not just the middle/high school versions.

This is the correct answer - I've recently helped perform it at a school in the UK (where we're much more leniant on these things), and even then we got the edited version. They haven't done it for the actual licensed major productions, but schools and local theatres get the cleaner version. I mean, they sang the lyrics we all know (ecept for the primary school children, for hopefully a good reason) for the proper nights, but they were the lyrics we got. Weird, considering some of the school ones are actually worse than the orginal, just like's been mentioned for this show. Still, good fun regardless.

I was bugged by that. PUH-LEASE! I saw the movie when it was originally in theatres (I'm dating myself, I know), and had the album. I was 11. I remember being surprised by the lyrics, but my life wasn't ruined over it.

I was also 11 when I saw it in the movie theater. I didn't even catch most of the lyrics that they think are offensive to kids. I didn't catch the saran wrap representing protection either. I was too young and naive. I missed them singing it tonight as I forgot it started at 6pm cst. I hate that they edit it though.

reply

I was curious how they were going to handle it.
At a Sioux City Musketeers hockey game one night, they played the entire song from the movie, unedited. And it was Girl Scout night. Pretty funny.

I expected them to cut out the profanity, but also noticed they changed "the chicks'll cream" to "the chicks'll scream".

Anyone else catch that?

reply

Probably a good change...Does not really alter the song too much, keeps with the general message, and allows parents to avoid having that awkward conversation where they have to explain to their 10-year-old what "cream" means.

reply

The stage show was much more raunchy than the movie and the move was much more raunchy than the TV show.

Though I question the licensing of the "clean" version of the song. There isn't one, it was "adjusted" for TV. This is fine, it was a prime time show, you can' keep the racy lyrics or the saran wrap references either.

reply

I laughed when I heard Kenickie sing "It's a real Dragon Wagon"

reply

That's the main one I noticed and I literally lol'd.

reply

Yeah, this was one of the things I was most curious about, too.

I remember seeing the 1978 film on broadcast TV a number of years ago, and "Greased Lightnin'" was so severely edited that half the song was missing.

reply

I remember seeing "Grease" in probably it's first TV broadcast and they cut out the part where Sandy closes the car door on Danny's crotch! Groinal-injury humor was still a bit touchy back then.

This aired here at 6 pm CT last night so it was REALLY the "family hour" so to speak.

reply

I'd rather they sing this version of the song than have them sing the original and Fox have 15 bleeps or audio silence all through the song.

Because they wouldn't have allowed the original lyrics and they are on a 10 second delay just in case someone curses or something. One of the cast members during The Wiz Live cursed and the audio went silent when he did it.

Broadcast networks and even some cable networks like ABC Family (Freeform) still bleep that song or edit the entire Greased Lighting number out of the original movie altogether.
