Spoil the film for me please

I've no intention of seeing this film, but have heard conflicting comments on its ending. Some have said its very predictable (which t me would mean the daughter was ultimately forced into marriage, as it just seems like that kind of movie). Others have said it has an unexpected ending.

IMHO: It has "an unexpected ending." But before I say more, please tell me why you say would say this about a film that has been winning awards all around the world & will likely be on the Oscar Short List for Best Foreign Language Film come January?

"I've no intention of seeing this film."

What is it that you think you know that leads you to be so dismissive?

Just askin'

Depends what you mean by 'dismissive' I suppose. I was really just being clear I wasn't intending to see it (hence no issue with spoilers).

I've heard it's a well made film, but from what I can tell it probably isn't my cup of tea so it's not on my 'to be seen' list. We all have to make these calls as no-one can see every film, read every book etc.

And while I take an interest in awards such as the Oscars, they don't usually sway me one way or other on seeing a movie. Titanic won a lot of awards.

I do not want to give away the ending in hopes that others will see Sand Storm -- even if you do not -- but what makes it surprising is the POV.

In the final scene, the POV suddenly shifts from the first sister (eldest of four) to the second sister (of the four). Audience can feel that she has been watching, listening & learning all the time, therefore she will elude similar situations. So the ending is surprisingly optimistic about cultural change and how progress happens... slowly... over time.

Of course people who want to be reductive will see a movie about women getting married, boring, boring. But then those people probably don't like Jane Austen either.

Allow me to point out that in both Pride & Prejudice AND Fiddler on the Roof, the first daughter makes a conventional marriage, the second daughter makes a less conventional marriage, and -- for better & for worse -- doors are thereby opened that seemed to be closed at the start of the story.

So maybe this is not your "cup of tea," but it is certainly mine.

All best,
Jan

Thanks Jan.

I would hope people who would consider seeing the movie, but not if they learn the ending, would be smart enough not to read a thread titled "Spoil the film for me please".

But never mind, I can find out the ending by asking a friend who's seen it. Mind you he really liked it, and your answer was quite interesting so maybe I'll watch it after all.

Maybe...

Affirmation that the first sister of the four is forced into an arranged marriage at the end? Surely, I already gave you enough clues to deduce that factoid...

But as Roger Ebert always used to say: It's not the what, it's the how. And the how is never a factoid about the ending, it's always the culmination of a journey.

Take this journey, Stev-2. I think you will appreciate this invitation to walk in the shoes of these Bedouin women for ~ 2 hours (even if the film has already won many awards & may well be nominated for a BFLF Oscar soon).

Based on our correspondence, I have faith in you :-)

All best,
Jan
