This is bad Disney at best. It's implausible without whimsy and serious without logic. Frankly, this is a premise in search of a much better script. As is, it may appeal to 10-year-olds, but not particularly savvy or discerning ones.

You want children to see early on that life is nothing but despair and poverty and wandering around homeless through swamps in this country and that it all ends up dying alone in a retirement home? What the hell? There's nothing for children in this movie.
