Clever Show, But Cheesy

The show is pretty clever and I do pick up a couple of interesting ideas each episode, but it seems like a large number of the hacks are just impractical or they waste more time and resources than they save.

I mean there was one where, to make an air conditioner, you got a stryofoam cooler, cut holes in it, tape an old fan and tubing to it, and then fill the chest with ice. C'mon. It might work kind of, but no one has old fans sitting around and they aren't going to rush out and buy a cooler and tubing. If you have ice, just put it in a baggie and rest it on your neck. Ta da!

And then they covered a mirror with toothpaste ... the whole mirror ... about a quarter-inch deep. No! To create a film on the mirror against fogging, you'd only need a squirt of toothpaste on a tissue and then smear it around until it was a thin film.

Even so, they immediately showed a different hack where a hair dryer clears the fog in ten seconds.

I dunno about this show. It's cute and somewhat entertaining, but it's most not useful.

Personally, I think the show is kind of silly. There have been a ton of viral hack photos all over the internet for a long time. I don't ever see much on the show that I haven't already seen on Pinterest or something similar. Some of the hacks seem impractical and require more trouble than what the task is worth. Other times, the hacks require "common household items" that I would never have lying around the house. The money-saving tips don't look helpful. Even the hosts come off as annoying at times.

I know that it's a casual show and I'm sure that many others get tips they can use from it. It just doesn't really catch my interest. If my roommate didn't like it, I wouldn't bother watching anymore.

I agree that some of these hacks are worth more trouble than they save. The point of "hacking" is to make something easier but I guess they confuse it with "other ways to do everyday things but not necessarily easier ways".

I remember distinctively a segment where they made forks out of pencils and paper clips? That is total wack!

Right. For every one useful hack there are four or five that are just impractical.

Like the one where you "trick" your kids into sweeping the floor by taping two big squares on the floor and challenging them to get more dirt in their square. No kid would fall for that and it would take you more time to lay out two squares and then pull them up later than if you just swept up the mess yourself.

As I say, it's a cute show that can provide a couple of tips, but it's most useless.

You know what's a better hack to get your kids to sweep the floor? Give them $5. About the same amount of money you'd spend on that roll of tape, and they'll spend the $5 on something you would of ended up buying for them anyway. Everyone wins, kids are happy, floors are clean and you now have the free time to grab that bottle of vodka you hid behind the dryer and remind yourself that it's 8pm somewhere in the world.

take it less serious and you will like it more lol just wonder if there is a hack to remove that chick's lipstick. sheesh

To the OP
Regarding the cooler, ice and a fan to make an "air conditioner" has been done in California (and other hot dry regions) since the 1960's - they are called "swamp coolers" or "swamp boxes". You can see them attached to the roofs of older model mobile/travel trailers if you drive through poorer areas (or places that have groups Eco-friendly housing) of California, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada (areas that I have personally seen them).

No. That's not how a swamp cooler works. You don't add ice, just water. As the water evaporates, it uses up some of the heat in the air, making the air cooler. What this show is proposing is using ice as the cooling agent, as you would by putting ice in your drink. That's not the same as a swamp cooler.

You have to understand that it is a show on Trutv, a network that has reality type shows, made to entertain the masses. The show actually started out as one where they thought you could naturally make useful things out of items found commonly around the house. Of course, while they had to keep that notion, they also had to fill time. The show would be gone because of course not everyone has things around the household to make some of the most complex things to function.

When they made the second season, you had to have noticed that they were then relying on the audience to "send them ideas". It sucks because we, the audience, are losing our effort and ideas to these two hosts and the producers, who are getting paid upwards of $1000/hr. to do it. What they should have done was encouraged the people, who submitted ideas, a monetary incentive.

You really just have to take this show with a grain of salt.

Better watch out, better start crying. Better hurry up, run and hide. Krampus is coming to town! >:)
