The mom is too trusting

It "show" is. But that's Hollywood for ya.

It's not that she's too trusting, it's that she's DESPERATE to believe that her son is alive and that this boy/young man is her missing son.

I know this movie came out prior to the current show on ABC, but this is reminding me of The Family. So, I'm wondering if the creators of The Family took their idea from this movie.
