Miley ruins it

I was with it until she showed in Ep 2.

Glad I'm not a Millennial because I don't have your generation's connection with Miley Cyrus. All I know about her is that she's Billy Ray's daughter and that she did an impressive cover version of Paul Simon's song "Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover."

reply

It seems like you just don't like her for own personal reasons. So when she showed up you decided to just dislike the show.
Why even watch it if she was in the previews & her name was under starring.

reply

My first reaction was UGH. I wish more had been done to change her appearance so it didn't seem like Hannah Montana was pretending to be a radical. In her scenes with Allen, however, he made her much more believable. They were very funny together.

My teenage daughter, however, stopped watching. She can't stand Miley Cyrus.

reply

When she guested on Two & a Half Men I thought she did extremely well.

But somehow I didn't buy her in this. I felt the authenticity was lacking. Perhaps she's too charismatic. You keep thinking "that's Miley Cyrus" rather than "that's Lenny".

Along with Miley being the Scapegoat of the Century for this show, it's not just her, in my opinion, it's her one-dimensional dialogue. Her lack of being a great actress makes it impossible to even try figuring out if she's a sort of parody of Far-Leftists or what. She just kinda reads the lines.

So I'm with you there. But... One thing...

The college guy who has a fiancee and a crush on Miley is, in my opinion, even WORSE than she is. Such a dullard. He's not funny or interesting, and hell, at least Cyrus is somewhat attractive... Her body, anyway...

Thank you! Apparently people thought I didn't like her because of her name. I don't know much about her besides she was Hannah Montana and stirs controversy. I gave her a chance, she's blah and uninteresting. and yes one-note--very good way to describe her acting!

Oh, COME ON, the whole series is just a mess and just because it's a Woody Allen series, "ex Disney now naked slut" Miley Cyrus gets the blame. She did her part really good. Miley doesn't ruin it. The crappy scenario ruins it. Woody Allen himself admitted he had no inspiration and that he regretted doing the series.

reply

Well maybe Allen's sins with the film aside, her performance is still terrible. Doesn't change a thing.

reply

I was expecting her to be terrible. I was surprised....she was actually pretty good. Don't get me wrong....she isn't the next Meryl Streep, but she handled her role pretty well.

reply

It wasn't a part that required range or depth. She played an angry radical, a one-note performance sounded over and over again. A few days out, I think Allen was wise to cast her. He's known for generally casting people whose mannerisms and speech fit a part. No, I don't see Miley as an angry radical, but she tends to shout her words with no inflection or nuance. Overall, I think that worked pretty well for this role. Again, I think she and Allen played off of each other very well in their scenes.

reply

It was nice to see her in an actual role for once but she was just bad in this. I think its cause every time I see her I think of all the weirdness of her real life and thats what ruins it for me. I liked seeing her in those pajamas tho.

First time I've seen her in anything. Not impressed with her acting at all. Maybe it was the dialog because she seemed to get better later in the show.

reply

I'd heard of her, but hadn't seen her act in anything before this. I wasn't impressed. Thankfully, her part didn't end up being all that big by the time it was all done. She got the plot rolling but didn't have to carry too many scenes--which was good, because I don't think she's capable.

Please don't call someone a _____tard.

reply

I think it's her voice.

When she speaks, her voice sounds deep and, well... kinda cavernous.

Definitely her voice sounds much better when she sings (I dislike her songs, but her voice is good). Some lines sound awkward with that voice. Some lines work, though.

I guess if she was doing a traditional part in a traditional sitcom with traditional dialogue, she would be better.

One quick extra comment, even though that was definitely not her hair, it was a reminder of how much prettier she looked back when she had her natural long brown hair, I don't know why she never tries her original look every now and then.

One thing I noticed which I found pretty amusing, which I'm sure wasn't intended by the actors, is how Miley Cyrus's character, Lennie, and the John Magaro character, Alan Brockman, have almost identical sounding voices!  It's particularly notable in their "walking around and talking" scene.

reply

I thought she was better in other episodes, but yes, she was obviously outgunned as an actor here. Of course, she's opposite Woody Allen and Elaine May, so who's going to look good next to that comedy duo?
