Isn't this offensive to blacks?

It seems to be saying, "Look, blacks aren't simple minded savages after all, this one even learned how to play chess!"

reply

it says that only if you think blacks are simple minded savages in the first place you phuktard.

reply

Yes indeed. Blacks are just as smart as everyone else and the only reason Africa is the poorest and most backward continent is because those dastardly white people are engaged in a giant conspiracy to hold down blacks. !!!

reply

actually yes, on every level.

reply

That's funny! You probably did not intend to insert so many truisms in your sarcasm.

One of the film's stronger points is how it shows the class prejudice and snobbery of the well-to-do Ugandan urbanites toward their impoverished rural brethren, living in shantytowns. Yes, the film reflects how some people view others as too dumb or uneducated or uncivilized to succeed at a sophisticated game such as chess, but that prejudice flows from one group of Ugandans toward another.

Prejudice comes in many shapes and forms.

reply

No, it doesn't. It only shows that Chess isn't a game for the Russian aristocracy only.

To the OP:

Sounds like it's you that's hung up on these old outdated racist stereotypes about Africans. Obviously, you're never seen African films made by African directors, which show how diverse and fascinating the cultures in some African countries are. Try watching them for a change. It's only because you so rarely seen a Hollywood film about black Africans from their point of view that you're even saying this. Also, this is based on a true story. And, no, as a black person, I don't see anything offensive about it. For one thing, the directer herself has resided in Africa for years (where the film was shot) and she's never been a Hollywood director anyway, and has directed mostly films with people of color in the leads. So she was fit for this story, period.

It's only offensive to the ignorant such as yourself.

The narrative has been used in many sports films regardless of race, so why would a "prodigy rises above their origins" story be racist? Especially when there is no white savior.
