Why Didn't Lupita Get 1st Billing On The Poster?

I love the design but does anybody know the reason why Lupita got 2nd billing to David Oyelowo? The poster makes note of the fact that she's an Academy Award winner, yet she wasn't good enough to be mentioned 1st? It just doesn't make sense to me.

Normally I'm not one to get hung up on trivialities, but this was something that jumped out at me and so I felt the need to question it.

Yeah that is really odd, I'm surprised Nyongo didn't get billed first especially with how big she is in the media at the moment.

'Buffalo hunting? I've gone buffalo huntin'? What the *beep* does that mean? Buffalo huntin'!'

reply

Yeah, it's definitely weird. I looked into it and the only (potential) reason I can think of is that David has been working as an actor longer than Lupita, and is, therefore, more established (his 1st credit listed here on IMDb is from back in 1998 while her first is from only 2008). Still in all, though, I'm unsure whether that would be a fair justification for not giving her 1st billing.

reply

I find this weird too but perhaps it's just crediting them by age? I mean he's 40 and she's 33 and the kid after her is younger so maybe that's why?

It is what it is. Halle Berry one an Oscar during filming of X-Men 1 but didn't really get the screen time and billing she deserved until X-Men 3. Jennifer Lawrence on the other hand winds an Oscar and becomes the new star of the franchise.

reply

And immediately drove it into the ground....

reply

Your timing is completely out. 'X-Men' was released in the summer of 2000. Halle Berry won her Oscar for the following year's 'Monster's Ball', the award being announced in March 2002. While with hindsight it appears that the X-Men movies are stuffed with top talent, the only actual Oscar winner in the cast at the time the first film was made was Anna Paquin.

reply

She won in 2001 not 2002. I remember in the X-Men DVD Bryan singer and the some of the cast were congratulating Halle on winning an award but it must have been for something else.

Either way I still think it's clear to see that Jennifer got the better treatment after winning an oscar. Two films pretty much revolve around her and she's not even supposed to be a hero.

reply

I'm beginning to think she's not in the movie that much.

Oh, that would be a shame. I am so excited to see this movie, and September is here already, I am so happy that four movies that I think I will love are premiering this month here in my country.

Well, a little bit of Lupita is better than nothing.

"...It is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing."

reply

I saw the movie. I can't speak about the poster, but David's role is much larger....and I believe he produced the movie.

reply

Actually wasn't a producer

reply

Saw the movie tonight. David's role was the bigger role in this.

reply

It's a Disney movie, targeted toward kids. I don't think any younger kids have seen 10 Years a Slave.

I shall call him Squishy and he shall be mine and he shall be my Squishy.

reply

I just saw the movie and David Oyelowo and the girl are co-leads with Lupita's role being a substantial supporting role.
