Why do we have a Women's World Chess Championship ?

I don't know if this ugandan girl has competed in it but most female chess players do. Men are banned from competing though naturally, women are allowed to compete in the World Chess Championship which is open to both sexes but always dominated by men. It certainly appears that women themselves agree they don't have the brains of men.

Women cannot generally compete with men at the highest chess level. Susan Polger being the main exception that I can think of.

I think you mean Judit Polgar. Hifan You from China sometimes competes against men. I think she's going to play Nigel Short in a 6 game match soon.

reply

Yes, Judit. Thanks.

I don't follow chess anymore so I'd never heard of Hou Yifan so I looked her up. She's currently the highest rated woman in the world but rated 112th overall. Impressive, but she still has a ways to go to become another Judit.

It was probably very necessary to establish this due to people unfairly finding excuses to disqualify women from chess tournaments. But if this kind of disenfranchisement is done away with completely, then you're absolutely right that there should only be one tournament for everyone.
