Biggest boxoffice disaster of the decade!

Production: $15m
Marketing: $36m (Disney said this was one of their heaviest marketed movie of the last few years)
Prints etc: $1m
Gross revenue: $6m

Loss:$46m

I am sure that many recent movies have lost more money. Also, the film will still have a chance to gross money overseas; who knows how much money it might gross in Africa and elsewhere.

Pawn Sacrifice (another chess movie) had an even worse performance, with a cost of $19 million and sales of just over $2 million. That movie wasn't very good, but I really feel that Queen of Katwe deserved better. Hopefully it will pick up a little when it comes out on video.

this was heavily marketed. everytime tv came on i saw this movie's trailer. so its quite shocking the severity of the flop

Any chance of link to that marketing costs figure? On this side of the pond it's had precious little marketing and has been given limited release (more's the pity). All I can find are references to its being marketed in the US on a very soft basis (http://deadline.com/2016/08/queen-of-katwe-faith-based-marketing-disney-plan-1201810960/)

If Disney actually did spend $36m, it didn't get that much notice - US friends claim not to have even heard of it.

Razzies 2016?

YOU'RE SUCH A PHUKTARD PUCCY

I'm in the Los Angeles area and there wasn't much marketing here. In fact, I came to imdb to see if it was released yet. I'm just discovering that it's come and gone!

reply

I think it will do well on DVD and on demand.

reply

You're straight up lying. The movie did not have a large marketing budget, and it actually had quite a small release (largest theatre count was 1200).

reply

Yeah I would like to know where OP came up with those numbers.
