I am sure that many recent movies have lost more money. Also, the film will still have a chance to gross money overseas; who knows how much money it might gross in Africa and elsewhere.
sharePawn Sacrifice (another chess movie) had an even worse performance, with a cost of $19 million and sales of just over $2 million. That movie wasn't very good, but I really feel that Queen of Katwe deserved better. Hopefully it will pick up a little when it comes out on video.

shareAny chance of link to that marketing costs figure? On this side of the pond it's had precious little marketing and has been given limited release (more's the pity). If Disney actually did spend $36m, it didn't get that much notice - US friends claim not to have even heard of it.
I'm in the Los Angeles area and there wasn't much marketing here. In fact, I came to imdb to see if it was released yet. I'm just discovering that it's come and gone!
