Completely Awful- Netflix' first bomb

Yeah it's really bad.
Watched two episodes and didn't laugh once. Whole show is dependent on laughing at 40 something's cast as teens.
It's luke watching a bunch of millionaires goofing around. Doesn't even seem like there was a script.
What is behind this? A movie that became somewhat of a cult hit inspired a few big stars to slum it?
Am I supposed to be stoned?
Someone explain!!

I wonder if some of the A listers who actually showed up wonder why they even wasted their efforts. I agree with you. This is a really bad show and it's not funny at all

reply

After not smiling for probably 18 minutes, I switched it off when one idiot kid challenged another idiot kid to a burping contest. Utterly humorless and absent intelligence.

My problem with this show is that it relies too much on awkward humor and it misses the mark almost everytime. This is the problem with most shows that tried to copy Arrested Development (and I'm talking first three seasons AD exclusively.)

I think to use awkward humor successfully there needs to be the element of context and precedent set. I.e. this scene between these two characters is awkward because this character is/does ..... but this other character doesn't understand that ...... which is awkward.

However, it's very hard to set that up with so many characters none of who can't really have much screen time and, as such, we can't dig into what makes their characters tick. Therefore, in many scenes we're left wondering why certain interactions are supposed to be awkward given that we don't have solid context on many of these characters.

Good thing the show is a prequel to a movie, with awkward humor intact, that was written and produced before Arrested Development ever aired on television. Anyone who is interested in the show should have watched the movie first. 1. This let's you know whether or not you will even enjoy the show, and 2. It sets up the context of who most of these characters are.

reply

It's not your guys kind if humor. That's fine, but a lot of people seem to really like it as well as myself and it will pull a specific crowd to getting a Netflix subscription. I wouldn't call it a bomb by any means.

reply

Well its a prequel or spin off or whatever to the original movie with all the original characters when they were 14 years younger. Its always been a really over the top satire. Seems more like actors movie where they just get together and goof around for the sake of it. I actually enjoy the movie and the tv show. Stupid humor yes but still great.

I read this in a chola accent.

reply

Seems to be you either love it or hate it. I love it. I'm really happy they got to make it. I agree that it's kind of like watching friends just good around, but I like that. I love the original movie and I liked the new characters added for the TV show.

I could have done without the little kid storyline and the Coop/Donna storyline.

reply

Ditto - enjoyable for me, as I liked the movie a lot when I saw it for the first time (and still do). Sure, it's irreverent, goofy, non-sensical, and "watching friends just goof around," but I'll happily take it. And it's light-hearted fun -- we need more of that!

reply

Do you mind explaining what they did to Chris Meloni's character? How he ended up going from some long haired, pussy punk wearing pastel polos in this to the short buzz cut having, bandana wearing, tattooed up, tank top wearing hardcore dude in the movie? I never finished the series and don't ever plan on it either, but was curious.

reply

Why should anyone tell you that if you're too lazy to watch it?

I am amazed at 1) the number of people who just don't get it and 2) the people who pass judgment on this show because they didn't watch the movie and thus also fall into #1.

Idiots.

I watched the movie when it first came out, was a big fan of the movie and still am to this day. I had just watched the movie a couple weeks ago without even knowing there was a show coming. I heard about it and tried it out, but the show was just to damn absurd and ridiculous, it lacked the charm and feel the movie carried and I just didn't have a taste for it. So sue me.

reply

LOL. Guys is full of it. He clearly never watched the first movie. The exact same style of jokes are on display here as in the first. I don't understand people like this.

They show his transformation in the seventh episode. Molly Shannon dumps him at the altar and he goes crazy, although not as crazy as he was in the movie

reply

K thanks. I appreciate the intel. I just couldn't bring myself to finishing it.. I found it to absurd. Especially after watching the movie a few weeks prior to even finding out about the show. The show just didn't have the same charm and feel to it.

reply

I thought the Donna and Coop storyline was gold. Just the absurdity of Donna continually leading Coop on for no reason struck a chord with me. And when he would do things to woo her, she would express disgust under her breath while keeping a smile on her face.

reply

I didn't like it very much either. I didn't hate it - it was just "ok" for me. Which was disappointing to me because I typically like this type of humor. I also adore most of the cast. The only scene I liked was with Hamm and Meloni. Otherwise, it just felt forced and flat. Bummer because I really wanted to laugh. Ah well, I'm sure for others it was great.
As for if you're supposed to be stoned - I don't know. I don't smoke pot, but I'm sure that would make it funnier.

reply

It's stupid and full of itself. Typical snl cast vanity project

reply

You do know they are from The State and not SNL right?

reply

Its a mixture of the two

reply

Molly Shannon and Amy Poehler are the only ones that come to mind. Definitely not what I'd call an "SNL vanity project."

reply

You should definitely be stoned to watch this

reply

This show is hilarious. If you don't like it, don't watch it. Your opinion is not Gospel OP.

reply

Hilarious? Even people who like it would never call it that. Raise the bar please.

reply

This show is hilarious. I love it. You might have to trudge through the mud for a while, but there are some scenes that are just so funny I can't even imagine how they came up with it.

reply

Notice the posters above actually acknowledged its a specific type of humor- akin to farce. It's not to my taste, but ican see an appeal. Calling it "hilarious" is pedestrian. How about some examples in which you broke down in fits of uncontrolled laughter, barely able to breathe, with your face turning red?

reply

Gladly.

Example 1: The entire scene with Gene and Victor.

2: The guy eating nuclear waste with a spoon.

3: Miss Patty Pancakes

I'm hard pressed to think of any movie/show being funnier than this one...can barely think of the last media with one example that made me laugh like that. And this movie had three - not to mention the dozens of chuckles (almost everything with and additional dozens of, while not laughing out loud, smiling and enjoying how clever the gag actually was.
