Accents are terrible

One thing that's really been pulling me out of this is how terrible the various accents are, particularly the Brits pretending to be American. Surely there are American actors that happen to be in the UK they could hire? Or Canadians, at least?

reply

Agree 100%. This is actually getting too painful to watch.

reply

Maybe americans need to learn there are other parts of the world...outside...The village!? Then... it would be easier to understand that there exists...Other dialects, accents...even languages?

reply

Not sure what that little rant has to do with actors of one nationality portraying people of another nationality...poorly and unbelievably.

reply

hahah people and their stupid accents....some of you actually even pronounce words differently and even slaughter them completely and somehow call it english. Shame!

reply

Most of these comments don't appear to align with my comment at all.

yeah i like cookies too

You're free to disagree with me. But you should at least be arguing about the same thing I'm arguing about.

reply

vhat u *beep* me no undastan. i *beep* not gud engrish. i only *beep* british.

reply

I totally agree, Paterson Joseph is like.. is he trying to sound cliche fake American accent done by a Brit or what? If not, omg, my cat can do a better accent, and he's Tabby! But only as I was about to reply to this post did I find out Mullaly is our crazy nazi! I knew I knew her, pardon the repeated text. But I refused to search who she was. And then the name "Tammy" came into my head!
But I digress, the Brits trying to be Americans are failing miserably, and I know it's hard to ignore, but if you can try. The show is so much more :)

reply

I only find Paterson Joseph accent to be terrible. The other American accents sounds fine to me.

reply

whatever meagan mulalley is doing is not in tone with this show at all and is laughable and distracting but jenna fischer's normal acting voice is the worst of the lot, incapable of seeming genuine

reply

surely Meagan Mulalley & Jenna Fischer are American anyway? re Paterson Joseph= I never think he's a good actor whatever the accent!
which English/American accents did you mean?

reply

Makes a change from Americans butchering English accents though I have to say I haven't really noticed what people are saying and that includes people wrongly including some of the Brits doing bad American accents who are really American.

That alone makes me think that there are some Americans desperate to say all the American accents are bad as some sort of revenge for all the times they've have to listen to British complaining about bad British accents done by yanks.

reply

Oh no! It's the IMDb Accent Police yet again!
It's a campy comedy, GTF over it!

reply

Well said. Its a well written, light hearted comedy that's not mean to be taken to seriously. Ive watched 7 episodes and didn't even notice any probs with the accents till i read some of the reviews on here!

reply

Paterson Joseph and Nina Sosanya are hilariously bad. Both sound similar with their southern American-sounding accents that sound as butchered as Dick van Dyke's cockney.

reply

that sound as butchered as Dick van Dyke's cockney.

NO THEY DON'T. Dicks attempt is [was] the benchmark for all to follow. even Brits try to sound like him sometimes. Not fond of the bow bells interpretation of the wonderful English language. I bet they think they are bilingual.

reply

Paterson Joseph sounds pretty much okay to my ears. I've lived in The South for a couple of decades and it really doesn't sound to me like he is doing a southern accent. I'm not even sure I would have known he was British if it weren't for the fact that I've seen him in every episode of Peep Show.

Now Nina Sosanya's southern accent is hilariously bad. Even many American actors who try to do southern accents fall flat and usually end up sounding like Foghorn Leghorn, but her southern accent is a whole other level of bad. There's about ten thousand southern black women they could have cast in that role, so why go with a Brit who can't do the accent to save her life?

Megan Mullally actually does a pretty good southern accent, even if it's a little exaggerated. But she doesn't fall in to a lot of traps that actors do when trying to do a southern accent.

reply

I've lived in the southern U.S. most of my life (Texas and Georgia) and assure you, that southern accent is very real as it can be down here. Awful, I know, but true.

reply

My family and I love this series. So what if some of the accents aren't
spot on, its a family comedy not meant to be taken serious as some of
the other reviewers seem to be expecting. I really hope there is a
Series 2.

reply

I love these accents. It's for me one of the reasons to look at it.

I know... I'm not from UK or USA. I'm a Southamerican who learned english... but I love hearing it.

I don't know if they're putting the right accents... they're using accents I like.

Family comedy? You must be joking.

reply

No Etis, im not joking. My family love it, one of the few shows that makes us laugh together. Well written comedy drama. We've just watched the penultimate episode and its a cliff hanger! Cant wait till its on again! Dont know why you guys hate it? Have you only actually watched the series?

reply

I personally think that the accents were not to bad (not brilliant though) but were fantastic compared to the ridiculous British accents in The Last Ship, they were just embarrassing.

reply

when "english " is not even your own language.. trust me.. you don't give a *beep* *beep* about brits or american or australian or whatev the *beep* accent may be.
