It's frakking AWFUL

Oh my gods. It's horrible. Not half a laugh in half an hour

reply

I gave up after about ten minutes. It was never funny. I thought it was supposed to be from the ads? I didn't know what to expect, but I just didn't like this at all. Is it a comedy? A drama? It seemed liked it was trying to be many things at once, and turned out to be nothing at all.

It's not for me, but that doesn't mean other people can't enjoy it.

Instant gratification takes too long.

Watched the whole hour but didn't laugh once. Won't bother watching anymore. The best part was Rob Lowe but I'll just stick with watching him on the Grinder.

reply

Yeah I didn't mind the story arc with Rob & the hot nun. Not much humor but was well done. The rest of the show though ...

reply

I really disliked this show. This is definitely not the show it was advertised as. It's a good deal more serious and dramatic. The humor I guess lies in watching cynical characters dealing with an apocalyptic situation. Not for me. I typically like this kind of thing but I think the whole show, from the premise to the casting is a total misfire.

Just singling you out because we are so often aligned in opinion.
This show is very dark British humour. I'm surprised at the number of Americans that can't find the comedy in it and many even enjoying it as a drama. Are our cultures that different or do you think it is more to do with the editing and clipping that NBC did to it?
I have not seen the edited version but have been following the shift in posts from the time it aired here and now that it is on your shores.

My wife and I, Americans, watch a lot of British TV and films. We love the humor and when we saw The Wrong Mans Jamie in this show we were very please. I like how he's playing the good and evil twins. We are Lowe fans so that's icing on the cake.

Different cultures. Actually,I find a lot of British humor to be juvenile and crude, full of groan inducing double entendres and bodily function gags.

Not to mention the fact that the number one show in Britain is a show called The Great British Bake Off, in which millions of viewers sped an hour each week watching people-uh,well-baking things.

Different countries, different cultures, definitely.

That's interesting as I would have said the same of American comedy, especially movies. I do love a smart double entendre but never understood the humor in fart jokes.

This is probably a case of biased perception. We tend to know things in our culture are for "the masses" or are just stupid shows and focus on the things we enjoy but think of things in a foreign culture as representative of the whole. This happens in politics all the time. We know when someone says something insane from our party he happens to be a wackjob outlier that is not representative of the general party membership. But when we hear of some insane thing the other party said we take it as the views of that dangerous party as a whole.

I agree with this. When someone says "British humor" I tend to think of Benny Hill or the series of Carry On films. Someone else might think of Noel Coward or the satire of a magazine like Private Eye. The same broad range of style applies to American humor. I guess it goes to show it's not good to make sweeping generalizations.

Good point.

As an American who's always been into British shows an used to Brit humor, I had no idea that the show was a British production until after I'd seen the first episode---got hooked on it right away because it was actually funnier and more interesting than the previews led you to believe. (That also explained why there were so many British actors in it in the first place.) I actually wasn't going to watch it because the previews made it look like just another dumb comedy---which it thankfully isn't. I like it and have been watching it every chance I've gotten--only missed 2 episodes so far. I love it,and all the characters, too. I actually didn't figure out until about the fourth episode or so that the sweet nice guy bank manager and his psycho twin were being played by the same actor (Matthew Baynton)because that's not something you see done a lot on mainstream U.S> TV, at least. Anyway, the show's a gem, and it's too bad it won't be back for a second season---plus I read on another site that the ratings had dropped, anyway.

This isn't a typical broadcast TV sitcom. It plays more like a dark comedy. I just watched the first hour and thought it was very funny at times. So it surprises me that someone could find no humor in it. Personally, I could watch any big bang theory, or modern family, and not laugh once.

Comedy is just one of those things that's very subjective. So just because you don't like it, doesn't mean it's horrible.

reply

Guess you missed the point. It's not really a comedy as much as a survival drama with comedic undertones. A really fantastic one. Too bad NBC totally mismarketed it.

I'm just fracking surprised nobody noticed your Battlestar Galactica reference.

reply

I agree. I'm getting ready to give up on it. I may give it one more chance but there are not enough laughs and when I do manage, they seem forced since this is very, very, very dry. I mean, a desert has more moisture in it then this dreck.
