LL's sign off

Am I the only one who feels like it is super awkward when he says "knock 'em out the box L"? I like LL Cool J, but it just seems too self centered.

reply

I completely agree with you, it just is bizar.

reply

He's not really self centered, he's just from that era of Hip Hop where they pumped themselves up a lot, that's all

reply

I like the show but I can't take him and Chrissy

reply

It is very awkward and seems completely out of place.

I came here because of that closing line. I don't think it's self-centered. I'm not sure, but it strikes me as a code to someone, similar to how Carol Burnett used to tug on her ear every time she ended her show. Turns out it was a secret message to her grandmother. I was wondering if that sign off of LL's was a code to someone also.

What is the full quote? My wife an I both find it really odd way to end the show. I thought it said “Knock 'em out the box, Sal, knock 'em out, Al

reply

It sounds like he says "Knock em out the box L, knock em out L." I think he is in some way referencing his song "Mama said knock you out." It's a great song, but I don't know what it has to do with hosting a lip sync battle.

reply

YES! This has been bugging me for eons, and it still makes me roll my eyes every time he says it. I mention how silly I find it every episode -- "why is he talking to himself?!" -- so much that my family now looks at me when he says it.

I'm so glad to find I'm not the only one who finds his sign-off odd.

reply

Its from Slick Ricks Childrens Story. At the end you hear Knock em out the box Rick, knock em out Rick. It baffles me too why LL changed it and hes saying it. It should be his hype man telling him to knock it out the box.

Remember, use the magic twig wisely

^ thank you for that information, TitoVicandJoey. I had no idea. I still hate it when LL says it, but at least there's a reference for it.
