I think it was Paige Spara that drew me in, and I liked the friend character well enough actually (Matt Murray). But I fully agree, aside from the actors who committed to their parts, the show felt like it was made by a crew that didn't have their heart in it. It lacked good writing, directing, it had weak production and simplistic photography.
You're right in that the love story is generic, but I think that makes it easier to relate to for more people. And I think it shows how out of touch the writing is. Everybody has had a situation where they've fawned over someone at school, or work and logically the vast majority of those go nowhere. There's a whole very well supported Internet culture centered around people being stuck in the friend zone. Then you have this show that takes those depressing, emotionally strong feelings, amplifies them and then mirrors them back out to their audience. And they call it a comedy.
