Melodrama sans camp

Almodóvar's best work, especially his early films, could be described as intense melodrama merged with high camp. It usually worked well. His latest film, Julieta, has all the elements of the former, without any of the latter.

Does this make it a lesser effort? Does it show a more mature artist? Does it matter? Probably not, to the last question. It's a nice film, moving and engaging, dealing with many of the themes we've seen before in Almodóvar films: children and parents, dealing with loss, etc.

Maybe not a major new Almodóvar film, but good indeed.

I have been so disappointed in the past few films and hesitant to even go see this one but oh so glad I did. This is so reminiscent of some of his earlier work. Wonderful film.
